XF 90mm f/2 R is on the roadmap

As mentioned by FujiRumors, the Fujifilm roadmap now has a 90mm f/2 prime on it.

http://www.fujifilm.com/news/n140724.html

FujiFilm sure knows how to crank out the lens that I bought for my FF DSLR setup.

The 85/1.2L and 135/2L are my favorite portrait primes for my Canon 5D3.

Now I will have the option to buy similar equivalent FOV and apertures for my Fuji-X setup.

News like this re-affirms that I made the right decision to go Fuji X over Sony A7R when it comes to lens selection.

Fuji certainly seems ahead of its competitors when it comes to producing a coherent range of quality XF lenses. The XC lenses are pretty darn good too!

Anybody know how big the lens will be and what the filter size will be?

They should be able to fit that focal length and aperture behind a 62mm filter. They will annoy many users if they go bigger. Not being stabilised, it should only be slightly larger than the 56mm.

Hi,

I'm really interested in the 90/2, but obviously the devil is in the detail - how big, how heavy, how close it focuses, and its performance.  It would be great if it's sealed too...... Pity it's a year away but I'm pleased that Fuji has listened.

The specs haven't been announced yet.  There are plenty of legacy full frame 85mm and 100mm f2's with 52mm filters.  The body of the lens will no doubt be a larger diameter than the old FF lenses to accommodate the AF motor.  OTOH, if it covers APSC only, that would act against a larger size.  I'm hoping it will have a 58mm filter to match the 14mm and 18-55, but no doubt others would like consistency with the 23mm and 56mm.

I guess we'll all know more this time next year.

Cheers, Rod

I'm excited. But I'd be more excited if it was faster
In reply to Marcos Villaroman, 4 months ago

Hopefully Fuji releases the final version as a faster lens around F1.4.

Fuji released the 56mm as faster lens than they originally said it would be. I hope they do the same with the 90mm.

Swings and roundabouts. It would be much bigger if it was f1.4. f2 is reasonably fast for a 90mm lens.

Agreed.  I've been waiting and hoping for a prime like this too.  Very good news indeed.

Reasonably fast is right. But the Nikon 1.4 and Canon 1.2 85mm lenses are nice on crop cameras. It would be nice to have a very fast 85-90mm for the X system that I can use auto focus with. Maybe Fuji will surprise us.

I was hoping to see more information on the super tele zoom. That is the lens I am interested in. Oh well back to my FD canons for a while longer.

1.2/85mm ... and then complain that the lens is too big and too heavy ...
I think the 2/90mm will be a very good compromise, in f-stop, weight and size.

90mm f/2 makes me wonder if it's going to have some decent macro ability... not 1:1 probably, but closer focusing than some of the faster telephotos out there.

Either way, it's on my watch list.

+1 for macro.  I was really hoping to get a longer focal length macro.  Not sure now whether I will end up with the 60mm, but since I have the 56mm I will just wait and see what the 90mm offers.

Hi,

I agree. I think Fuji have steered a very fine balance between the 'fast' camp and the 'small and light' camp with an f2 lens. I know the specs aren't out, but I suspect that it'll be small enough to please those who don't want to carry a telephoto zoom, and fast enough to offer decent subject isolation.

This is business.  If it was any faster, I almost certainly wouldn't buy it because of the size and weight, and there would be others with the same view. If it were any slower, they'd lose a different set of customers.

I'm looking forward to seeing it - when it's released......

Cheers, Rod

The optics and quantity of lenses is awesome. But I wish Fuji would concentrate on making modern mechanics...ultrasonic focus motors and image stabilization...both which this 90 should have. Optical stabilization doesn't add that much size and cost, just take a look at Canon's inexpensive, lightweight kit zooms.

I used the Sigma 85mm f1.4 on my Nikon D700 (tried the Nikon too) and it was a beast. The size of that thing is a good illustration of why I now use Fuji instead! If I had stayed with Nikon I might have downgrded to an f1.8 lens for that very reason. Personally I'd be happier if they went for a high quality f2 or f1.8 lens.

Ya, but you might as well use a stove lid for a lens. Canon makes crappy kit lenses. I decided on the old Olympus E system (in the dark ages), because I hated the Canikon kit zooms so much.

I'm not big on OIS. Just give me a clean sensor at high ISOs.

If you look at the review you'll see the image quality isn't all that bad.  Having said that, my point was OIS doesn't have to add a lot of size or cost to a lens.
