Flash for A6000?

I'm interested in an external flash for the A6000 that is a little better than the built in flash. I don't want to spend a lot of money and I don't need a great flash. Any recommendations? What I would use it for as to take pictures of groups of people at some event.

Here is a list based on what BH sells. I like Metz...

AFAIK (NEX 6 owner), the 6000 has the new MIS hot shoe, and is not compatible with many of the flashes on the above list - unless you want to shoot manual flash.

If you want TTL, the Sony HVL-F20M, HVL-F43M or HVL-F60M will work - see this link:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?atclk=TTL+System_Sony+NEX+3%2f5&Ns=p_OVER_ALL_RATE|1&ci=647&N=4168864822+4043133129

However, rumor has it that Nissin is releasing a version of their i40 for the MIS hot shoe at the end of July.

My personal take is that the F20M is an awkward design, the F43 looks OK and the F60 is huge on a mirrorless camera. I am waiting for the i40.

The F20M is a bit awkward, especially since Sony seems to have added an adapter to the shoe of it instead of just changing the connector... on the other hand, that also makes it sit up a little higher, which can be helpful.

Anyway, awkwardness aside, it works well and is nice and small. Easy to carry anywhere.

Thanks. this is helpful. I have to say, I don't want to spend more than $100, and I can see that several satisfy that. The issue is, which of these are compatible with A6000. It is somewhat confusing.

The Sony cameras are all compatible with flashes designed for Sony but you will need a converter. Sony does a great job of making the flash options confusing and difficult, but that is life on planet Sony, there flash system IMO really stinks as do their flashes.

Reading the Q&A on the BH website is generally very helpful.

It is best to ask the store selling the flash if you have doubts.

I contacted B&H, and they said no compatible flash for <$100 is available. They said the Sony HVL-F20M is compatible without adapter. But Sony does not list it as compatible.

I also contacted Sony (chat) and they also said the HVL-F20M is compatible with A6000. That seems really the only option then.

Well the HVL-F20M would seem on the surface to be a good fit.   But watch out.  As a first time Sony camera user, I did buy the HVL-F20M when my A6000 was pre-ordered from what turned out to be inadequate information. After researching the Sony variety of hot shoes and compatibilities at depth which I see as a mini nightmare, then contacting Sony customer service, I regret buying that model.  My intent as someone that does considerable nature close-ups was to get a flash I could use off camera in order to not be limited to a flat view without shadowing, a camera mounted flash is stuck with.  I found it odd the Sony system for the camera did not actually have something to fill that niche.   And how confused the user community seemed to be with all these shoe types and adaptors needed.  The two adaptors and cable to get a person to that point cost almost as much as the flash itself.

Mounted atop the camera the flash works fine. And bounce flash is excellent.   However when my flash is mounted on a cable, it intermittently gets into an illegal mode where it turns itself off and will not immediately turn back on whether mounted on the camera or off, cable disconnected.   Oddly to get it to turn back on, I have to unbend and bend the power on switch OFF ON OFF from 8 to 12 times after which it usually turns on and charges.   That is possibly why Sony did not offer an accessory for that purpose because during Engineering they belatedly found the flash did not work well off the camera so quietly decided to discourage that use.  Supporting that speculation is the fact the Sony store website is strangely quite absent of any information about adaptors or cables for doing so and their sales people don't even have any information which is how I got into trouble.
