Yeah, so SMART that the lens is NOT a no-brainer.

  • 1 UD lens and 1 aspherical element
  • 22% shorter and 31% lighter than EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 STM (but half a stop slower with less reach)
  • 3.5 stops IS
  • AF accelerated with motor and algorithm optimization
  • full-time manual focus
  • uses ET-54B hood

Well, if this turns out to be true, it's a good indication that the news of EOS M's demise is greatly exaggerated....

I have to agree. F4.5-6.3 is not very appealing. Hopefully it is stellar optically otherwise.

why? worst case it's out 1/3 stop from most consumer zooms .. oh woe.  1/3 stop.

if it's as good as the other STM lenses canon has come out with - especially in this range, it will be good - hard for canon not to.

Oh look, it's my stalker again...

It is not very appealing (to me, at least) because it is 1/3 stop slower than an already slow zoom lens (i.e. the EF-S STM lens).

What exactly is your problem, pal? Which prime? I own three of them, along with four zoom lenses. You are just sore because you were found seeing unicorns and leprechauns on another thread.

no, actually you were and are probably still trying to blow smoke up everyone's ass because you don't what you are talking about.

get back to me when you comprehend the difference between a focal length and an equivalent field of view.

I don't think is a no-brainer either but that is good like having the choice between a 70-200f2.8 or 70-200f4.0 or a 70-300L etc. it is just nice to have the choice to be able to pick what best fits you and/or your budget.

Ok, so you do not deny that you are sore. Great....Right. Change the subject. The sad record (and demise) of the bizarre claim of "nasty edge distorsion" (talk about blowing up smoke up people's @rse!) and its devotees is all there on the forum record. I am not the one making up spurious claims and seeing things that have not been replicated by users here or the professional review sites.

Sorry, folks, Canuck stalker objections notwithstanding, if the alleged lens turns out to be real, I will be sticking with the EF-S 55-250 STM on the 650D for my lightweight, APS-C telefoto needs.

Canon EF-M 55-200 IS STM f/4.5-6.3 vs Sony 55-210 f/4.5-6.3

  • Weight: 260 grams vs 345 grams
  • Length: 87mm vs 108mm
  • Focal range: 55-200 (88-320 FF equivalent) vs 55-210 (82.5-315 equivalent)
  • Aperture: f/4.5-6.3 vs f/4.5-6.3

So, the EF-M lens is 25% shorter and 20% lighter! NICE! The focal range is a tad longer (even worth mentioning the difference?) on both the wide and tele ends of the lens and the apertures are equal - the only difference may be where the actual max aperture stops are on the focal range - I would assume they're similar but possibly not.

Also, the EOS M is 298 grams and the EOS M2 is 274 grams. This lens should balance VERY well on the M family!

I don't know if it is because of the very good finish & metal mount & barrel, but the Sony is too expensive for its performance level. Let's hope Canon prices more reasonably.

The existing EF-S 55-250mm is all plastic but optically better than the Sony. That is a better value proposition for me.

I would not call the Sony expensive for its performance. Maybe not cheap? For the most part, you can pick one up in a kit for an extra 200 or so or used for 200-250.

The difficulty in comparing E-mount lenses to A-mount or EF or Nikon kit zooms is that the build quality is much different. Most kit lenses have rotating front element/focus rings when autofocusing, and they are usually not silent with no DMF override.

The Olympus 40-150 compared to the Sony 55-210.

  1. Olympus is sharper, smaller, and lighter
  2. List $200 vs. $350, sale prices $120 vs. $300
  3. Neither have rotating front elements
  4. Both use internal focusing, the Olympus MSC motor is faster (I have both lenses)
  5. The Panasonic 45-150mm is also optically better than the Sony, has optical IS, and lists at $239.

I know Canon's newer DSLR kit-level lenses are internally focusing STM because that works better in Live View (and on the M, incidentally). No rotating front elements. The Canon 55-250mm STM is pretty expensive at $350, but it is optically excellent, much better than the Sony lens.

I'm not going to argue sharpness other than that the Sony is fine for a kit lens.  Comparing a 40-150 m43 lens is fine but the lens is still a 40-150 from a manufacturing point of view.  The Olympus lens is made of plastic while the sony body is made of metal.  The sony is more expensive to make and it's easy to see why.  Optical performance is one factor in price, but not the only one.

That said, the Sony lens is probably bigger than it needs to be and the Canon 55-200 shows that this type of lens can be made smaller for APS-C.  And hopefully it shows Canon is committed to the EOS M mount

It could be something they originally planned but put on shelf and now someone thought they'd put out some info to see what the reaction is.

Canon Europe have also announced the lens

http://www.canon-europe.com/About_Us/Press_Centre/Press_Releases/Consumer_News/Cameras_Accessories/new_EF-M_55-200mm_f-4.5-6.3_IS_STM.aspx

No mention of pricing or availability. My guess is around 350 GBP/Euro

Anyone who wants to see what the difference between a FoV of 250mm compared to 200mm looks like, can see it in my EOS M FoV comparison. http://eos-m.net/lenses/field-view-comparison/

if the price is translated to that amount of USD, seems rather hard to choose, (plastic mount for that price, come on canon...)

i better off go with the EF-S / Tamron 70-300 VC instead..

...or skip tele altogether, not quite a tele guy...

Good question.

They look pretty similar - if anything, considering the EF-S 55-250 MTF shows the lens at 250mm, then it may be the EF-S has the edge at the telephoto end, but the EF-M looks a bit better at 55mm
