Screenshot at http://digicame-info.com/2014/06/ef-m55-200mm-f45-63-is-stm-1.html

  • 1 UD lens and 1 aspherical element
  • 22% shorter and 31% lighter than EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 STM (but half a stop slower with less reach)
  • 3.5 stops IS
  • AF accelerated with motor and algorithm optimization
  • full-time manual focus
  • uses ET-54B hood

Well, if this turns out to be true, it's a good indication that the news of EOS M's demise is greatly exaggerated....

I would love this, 22% shorter plus you wouldn't have to use the adapter we must use with the 55-250 STM, so another 1" off, shorter yet. I wouldn't mind giving up some reach.

However, the big question for those outside of Asia is whether it will be released by Canon in the US or EU markets. It would seem slightly strange to release a new EF-M lens in the US and EU, whilst holding back the release of the EOS M2 camera. Even more so in the US where the EF-M 11-22mm was never officially released.

This really looks legitimate! If it is not released for sale in North America or Europe I'm sure it won't be difficult to buy on line from overseas.

Ouch, 4.5-5.3:((  this is probably first M lens I will need to pass. And 250 is more appealing.

It's even worse than that, it is 4.5 - 6.3, but it looks only slightly larger than the 18-55, they probably figure that it won't compete w/ the 55-250 in this configuration.

Tele is not my thing, and I prefer to get a bigger, but longer and brighter option for occasional shooting (moon, birds, far standing objects). Even old FD mount manual lens will do it for me:)

If I were heading up Canon USA
In reply to quiquae, 3 months ago

and I KNEW an M with a DPAF sensor was coming, I'd hold off releasing this lens.  Then, when the new M with DPAF hits, I'd also release this and the 11-22.

Honestly, this lens, IMO, COMPLETES the M ecosystem (WITH a DPAF M) for the AVERAGE US consumer.

Of course, being able to add the EVF from the G1XII as well as a couple of small primes would help round things out for the rest of us.

This lens is almost EXACTLY what I was saying Canon should shoot for.  A small tele zoom, even with a limited range.  My suggestions were 55-150 or 75-150 and max aperture at f4 or f4.5.  As long as Canon prices this similarly to their other lenses MSRP (not the street price, the MSRP) then I think they have a winner!

Nice job Canon!

Notice the plastic mount
In reply to quiquae, 3 months ago

This would be a natural next lens for EF-M.

Canon is keeping the same aluminum barrel look (could actually be plastic, who knows?) but it has a plastic mount, which indicates they are taking build quality of kit-level lenses down a notch.

I think this is good news, because a slow telezoom is a lens entry-level buyers actually shell out for, and those buyers are very price sensitive. That tells me Canon may finally be getting it that mirrorless cannot cost more than DSLRs, and they need to compete with the a6000 and E-M10, which are extremely competent cameras. The Sony 55-210 f4.5 - f6.3 is very nicely finished but way too expensive. The Olympus 40-150 f4-5.6 is a plastic fantastic, optically better than the Sony and sells on discount for $120. I thyik the Olympus lens is better matched to its market than the Sony.

+1 to those who wonder if it will be Asia-only. The limited release of the 11-22mm is a bad precedent.

Comparison (weight/length) to Sony's E mount 55-210
In reply to quiquae, 3 months ago

Canon EF-M 55-200 IS STM f/4.5-6.3 vs Sony 55-210 f/4.5-6.3

  • Weight: 260 grams vs 345 grams
  • Length: 87mm vs 108mm
  • Focal range: 55-200 (88-320 FF equivalent) vs 55-210 (82.5-315 equivalent)
  • Aperture: f/4.5-6.3 vs f/4.5-6.3

So, the EF-M lens is 25% shorter and 20% lighter!  NICE!  The focal range is a tad longer (even worth mentioning the difference?) on both the wide and tele ends of the lens and the apertures are equal - the only difference may be where the actual max aperture stops are on the focal range - I would assume they're similar but possibly not.

Also, the EOS M is 298 grams and the EOS M2 is 274 grams.  This lens should balance VERY well on the M family!

I don't know if it is because of the very good finish & metal mount & barrel, but the Sony is too expensive for its performance level. Let's hope Canon prices more reasonably.

The existing EF-S 55-250mm is all plastic but optically better than the Sony. That is a better value proposition for me.

I would not call the Sony expensive for its performance.  Maybe not cheap?  For the most part, you can pick one up in a kit for an extra 200 or so or used for 200-250.

The difficulty in comparing E-mount lenses to A-mount or EF or Nikon kit zooms is that the build quality is much different.  Most kit lenses have rotating front element/focus rings when autofocusing, and they are usually not silent with no DMF override.

I'd say the Sony 55-210 is actually pretty good at 210mm for a kit lens.  Many on the Sony forum have shown you can get great images, even at f6.3.

That being said, Canon has managed to keep their lens prices very affordable so far on the M system while retaining decent build and image quality.  This would be pretty good if it can shave off that much weight and length over the Sony counterpart.

f6.3 at the long end seems odd, wouldn't it be the first lens ever made for EF/EF-S/EF-M mount slower than f5.6?

The Olympus 40-150  compared to the Sony 55-210.

  1. Olympus is sharper, smaller, and lighter
  2. List $200 vs. $350, sale prices $120 vs. $300
  3. Neither have rotating front elements
  4. Both use internal focusing, the Olympus MSC motor is faster (I have both lenses)
  5. The Panasonic 45-150mm is also optically better than the Sony, has optical IS, and lists at $239.

I know Canon's newer DSLR kit-level lenses are internally focusing STM because that works better in Live View (and on the M, incidentally). No rotating front elements. The Canon 55-250mm STM is pretty expensive at $350, but it is optically excellent, much better than the Sony lens.

Comparison (weight/length) to CANON's EF-S 55-250 STM
In reply to Jonathan Brady, 3 months ago

The EF-S 55-250 STM is actually just a touch longer than the E mount Sony tele lens mentioned above (3 mm longer) and heavier (30 grams heavier). But, if you're talking about mounting the EF-S 55-250 to the M, you obviously need the adapter as well. You're adding an additional 28mm and 110 grams. So, here's the final comparison...

EF-M 55-200 f/4.5-6.3 IS STM vs EF-S 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS STM + EF to EF-M adapter

Weight: 260 grams vs 485 grams

Length: 87mm vs 139mm

Focal range: 55-200 (88-320 FF equivalent) vs 55-250 (88-400 equivalent)

Aperture: f/4.5-6.3 vs f/4-5.6

So, the EF-M lens is 37% shorter and 43% lighter! Obviously, the EF-M 55-200 is 1/3 of a stop slower at the wide and tele end and is slightly lacking in the "reach" department. The diagonal angle of view at 320mm is 7.7 degrees and the diagonal angle of view at 400mm is 6.2 degrees. So, 1.5 degrees. Significant... but also NOT significant.

I said it before, I think the focal range and aperture range compromises were VERY smart on Canon's part!
