What are you going with? 10-18mm or New FE 16-35 for A7/R

I was wondering how many of you who own a Sony A7/r are buying/bought the 10-18mm or  decided to wait for the FE 16-35mm from Zeiss. I am aware the 10-18 can be used between 12-16mm with little PP correction.

I have the 35 F2.8 and Kit lens and need an Wide Angle. Also with corporate discounts i can buy the 10-18 directly from Sony for around $660.

Would be great to hear what made you decide! Thanks for the participation!

If I had a7/7r/7s, I would pick 16-35/4. If I had an APSc body as well, 10-18 would be more logical (used on APSc and useable on FF).

there are suppose to be some new zeiss primes coming out for e-mount. I wonder what these are?

But anyway, I have a 16-35/2.8 and I am replacing it with FE35 and some other wide angle prime. Currently I have minolta 24mm/2.8 which is not ideal coming from 16-35 but hopefully I will be able to replace it with a nicer and wider prime.

So I guess neither lens is my answer.

I will buy the 16-35 when I have the budget for it. I currently have the 24mm and it is quite wide already so I think 16 will be fine on the wide end. the other option for me would be the 14-24 nikon. But getting native mount, OSS, probably lighter, and AF is worth something. Hopefully it will come in around the 1k mark.

Great inputs! keep them coming

I am not sure how much PP is needed in Lightroom to make the 10-18mm usable. I have seen some shots and they look great.

I have the 10-18

It does work in the middle ranges, better than i expected (A7R).  I also have the A mount 16-35.

Because I may be changing up my camera systems, I'm on hold for anymore E or A mount lenses for now.

I would wait for the 16-35/4 to come out. The full frame lenses have been getting twice the employee discount of the asp-c lenses, except the 70-200/4. The 16-35 should have better performance in the corners and less distortion then the 10-18. If the above holds up, it will be cheaper too.

From what I have seen the distortion is obscene, and remember the 10-18mm is really only corrected within reason for APS-C sized sensor.  Things like astigmatism and other aberrations will be very large near the edges of the frame.  However, this might be fine if you have the lens already and/or don't mind this (say use it casually).

Otherwise I would buy the full frame lens, the corrections will be better near the edge of the frame, even if it follows trend of other recent ZEISS branded standard zooms and is mediocre, it will still be better than the APS-C lens used on FE.

If you aren't in a hurry I would wait for the new lens.

one more thing, if a person didn't already have the 10-18mm, and wanted it for 14 or 15mm use on A7R, you might look at a manual focus lens in that range.  I have seen good reports on Samyang 14mm f/2.8 (but also seen reports of centering issues), which is like a $300 or $400 US lens.

If the new FE 16-35 has the same performance as the E 10-18 in the corners and edges on FF, I'd be very dissapointed. Low contrast and soft outside aps-c and the distortion is crazy. But its's a great lens on NEX/Ax000.

Yes, agreed, there are perfectly great legacy glass options if you are willing to accept (for the time being) using an adapter and possibly not having AF.

The nice thing about legacy lenses is they hold value.  You can buy and use one for a few months until the 16-35mm is available, the choose to resell it at little or no loss.

Today on Ebay i found a good copy of the RMC Tokina 17mm F3.8 for FD mount. I already have the adapters. It was good price so i bought it. I know the VC Heliar 15mm is pretty good but it was around $400 used. Once i get it i will post some pictures. Good thing is i can return it if i dont like it so im covered.

A UWA from the 16/28 on a Pana. 14/2.5 on any M43 camera that I've ever tried it on is rectilinear and shows zero corner or side issues. It's about 10 degrees equivalent and much sharper than on the 16/2.8.
