No..the 70D is going to have more features than the 7D.

It really depends on what you want it for. The 7D is a great camera, well built and weather sealed. It is a real workhorse. The 70D has the new DPAF which is great for live view focus and video, has a flip out screen and marginally better image quality at high ISO. So it really depends on what you are going to use your new camera for. Both are very viable options with their strengths.

More features but far worse in handling... So the 7D is still the top performer of the APS-C cameras!

No..the 70D is going to have more features than the 7D.

That only makes sense if the OP wants/needs features like wi-fi and a rotating screen.  The 7D has a more rugged build, slightly faster frame rate, larger buffer, more AF options, and uses CF cards rather than SD.

thank you my dear friends. don't need the weather sealing of the 7d. i think the 70d will be good enough for me. my late 40d just died so i want to get the latest model and not 3 years old model. 70d will fine. if i had no canon gear i would go to fuji x-t1. thanks again.

Then you will need a new remote release cable and memory cards and learn a new camera interface. The 7D is much closer in handling to the 40D than the 70D.

thanks karl gnter, the cards will go to my son. i'm getting the cable for free. the 7d is too old a model. learning new camera will be fun. in my age (62) to stay fit i have to study all the time.

Ans still it's the best APS-C for photographers. The 70D is more geared towards video usage and can get annoying quite quickly as the joystick has been replaced by the worst muddle of elements I have yet witnessed on any Canon DSLR (thumbwheel is smaller than on the 40D but it contains a mushy 8 way controller which gives no feedback if it has been pressed in any direction which in turn contains the old ok button. So unless you got the fingers and the dexterity in them of an 8 year old you will find this thing mighty annoying...

Who WOULDN'T want new features like wifi or rotating screen?

And SD cards was actually one of the reasons I wanted to switch to a 70D.

I would trade all those parts on the 7D for the rotating screen and wifi any day. Total game changers.

It's not quite that bad.  I have the 70D as a backup to the 7D; while it's not as intuitive it's not impossible either.

Umm...anybody that doesn't necessarily need them?  I have yet to use wi-fi on the 70D.

And SD cards was actually one of the reasons I wanted to switch to a 70D.

Glad you like them.  I hate 'em, they're much too small - very easily misplaced and more difficult to handle than a CF card.

I would trade all those parts on the 7D for the rotating screen and wifi any day. Total game changers.

The screen can be useful.  I'm not sure yet about wi-fi.

70Der wrote:

People who want a more rugged camera.

People who cannot have the potential security risk of wifi

People who like good ergonomics and don't want to chimp every couple of shots to drill down through a convoluted menu to change settings

People who buy proper field monitors

There are plenty of reasons to avoid the articulated screens.  Likewise, some people shun wireless networking for various reasons - some for cuckoo reasons like "radiation is bad for you" (um, only if it's ionizing radiation - which wifi is not), some for security, and some because it's just another thing to break.

And SD cards was actually one of the reasons I wanted to switch to a 70D.

Have you considered a wifi card and a field monitor?

If they come at the price of the mushy 8 way controller or lack of Spot-AF or CF card interface - thanks but no thanks. Have no use whatsoever for a rotating screen (although I photograph macro on a daily basis) nor wifi - I am usually miles away from the nearest WiFi hotspot and my smartphone is running down it's batteries fast enough without the drain of having that enabled!

And SD cards was actually one of the reasons I wanted to switch to a 70D.

I have thrown so many defective SD cards away that I don't care for these one iota - I handle them with extreme precaution but during a normal year I toss away 3-4 SD cards (Sandisk/Toshiba/Transcend) because they turned unredable in whatever device they were installed. SD-cards would be my worst nightmare on a camera. CF cards are small and fiddly but SD cards are impossibly fragile...

I would totally agree with that. The amount of SD cards I have thrown away after that silly write protect/enable tab fell off, or the card simply failed is just bonkers. Not had a single CF card fail on me yet.

I have never used a 70D, but it sounds like Canon updated the electronics and left the body the same as the 60D. My first Canon DLSR was a T1 and then a 60D. The buttons on the 60D always felt cheaper quality than even the rebel. I just don't see why every one compares the 7D to the 70D? The 7D still out performs Any APSC camera. Yes I think the 70D is a nice upgrade, but does not surpass the 7D in overall performance
