Advice for GPS to use during visit to UK (Yorkshire Dales)

Time is getting short - still haven't solved the mobile phone (have a Verizon Galaxy S3 which we won't be able to use) issue and will need a gps for the car.

Does it make sense to buy one or rent one from the car rental place.

Looking for the most costwise options.

Data coverage in that area is spotty and Google maps requires data connection - don't think that would be optimum.

Otherwise, we use Google maps all the time here in the US.  Love it - although preferred the previous version.

Doesn't the S3 have turn-by-turn satnav-style navigation with Google maps?

The cheapest GPS in Halfords (the big car chain store) is £50, how much would hiring one be?

Or buy a map?

Copilot uk&ire.

Turn by turn, works without needing phone signal or data (just gps) so should be fine on s3.

used it for years before updating my data package

Just read your previous comment about little coverage and you may be right.

As an alternative to a GPS device you might also think about TomTom's android app which is about £38 in the UK.

If you buy a true GPS you're better off buying it in the UK so you don't have to pay for maps. If you decide to keep it then you can buy US maps when you get home, otherwise you can sell it when you're leaving the country and recover most of your outlay.

Why can't you use your mobile? Presume there is nothing to stop you using a GB SIM in the phone?

Pre download and cache the appropriate GOOGLE maps then use in the UK, I've cached maps for use in France with no problems at all.

Someone  like TESCO does a pay as you go SIM for £1.00, minimum top up £10 and 500mb data for a month for another £5.

fairly inexpensive solution.

Most hire cars come with a map. Well they always used to anyway.

If you really don't know how you use a map and must rely on GPS then as said, you can just download the area you need.

The download/cache option seems to have disappeared from the latest release of google maps on android. Of course they may have moved the functionality to somewhere that I didn't find ...

Always been an optional extra in my experience. The extra fee usually exceeding the cost of a basic GPS unit.

It does, but Verizon, our provider, has dumbed down the use of data.  It isn't a global phone.

Re: Map....what's that?....
In reply to paul_kew, 6 months ago

Considering my aging vision that would be difficult and I'm directionally challenged!

Haven't checked rental prices with the rental agency.  Will have to do that.

Thanks for the feedback.

I think that he may be talking about that rare object, a paper map!

Our provider, Verizon, has a different system than other providers and it won't work with a SIM overseas.

Suspected cost would be high.
