Capture NX 2 also got an update to 2.4.7.

In the notes for both it says support for XP has been dropped so if you are still running that OS, don't update.

Thanks, Don, downloaded and installed both CNX2 and VNX2 without a hitch.

Just hope these are not the last updates we'll see, I use CNX2 as my NEFs editor, will miss it when it's gone. In fact, I plan to continue using both CNX2 and VNX2 after their announced demise, probably in a dedicated photo editing notebook running under Win 8.1.1, as suggested by Thom Hogan in a recent article on the subject.

?

Did you install the latest versions of VNX2 and CNX2 on a Win XP system?

Because I found out (on one of my older laptops, which runs XP) that the installer refuses a Windows XP system... "ViewNX 2 does not run on your operating system"

Last?  Really?  New DSLRs from Nikon will not include any software that can read the NEF files?  Hell of a business plan.

Don

Why would it be the last one unless Nikon stops making cameras?

Did you try with the 32-bit version?

Yep.

The installer is testing for the local OS version and if OS is WinXP, it just quits...

Or did you find a workaround?

I see this:

  • Support for Windows XP has been eliminated.
  • Only Pre-installed versions supported.
  • Both 32 and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista & Windows 7 are supported, however, on a computer running a 64-bit OS, only View NX 2itself and the Picture Control Utility function as native 64-bit applications

How does that translate into this update being the last one?

Nikon has announced it will replace Capture NX2 with a new software package called Capture NX-D. Once NX-D has been formally released, support for CNX2 will be halted. The problem is that NX-D functionally lies between VIEW NX2 and Capture NX2 -- most importantly all NIK selection point and colour control point technology has been removed which, to me, makes this decision a huge mistake by Nikon.

NX-D will certainly convert NEF's but it's pretty well useless as a stand-alone converter+processor for doing anything more than simple conversion, global exposure & contrast adjust, crop and print.

You all are very correct, View NX2 may live forever. I incorrectly assume that Capture NX D would also replace View.. my bad. They just seem very similar.

As NX-D will be a free package as well, to me it seems very unlikely that both NX-D and ViewNX2 will continue to be supported.
