Australian Butterflies with the FZ200 and Canon 500d close-up lens.
In reply to ysal, 6 months ago

Here are three butterflies that I took at the zoo using my Panasonic FZ200 fitted with the Canon 500d Close-up lens. The lens was attached to the end of an extension tube that I normally use for my teleconverter. In the past I have usually just attached the close-up lens to the end of the zoom lens, but I think it works a little better when it stays in one spot, rather than moving in and out with the zoom. More experimentation in probably justified. All shots were hand held. A tripod would have been handy, but there were a lot of people in the butterfly enclosure and it would have been almost impossible to set one up without incurring the wrath of all the other people. Its school holidays here and there were lots of small children and prams to contend with the entire time I was in there.

Two beautiful shots Fulvio. I especially like the second one, as the darker background really enhances the colour on the flower.

These used to be collected in the past here in Slovakia by the people in villages.

Hey, they are even being used to make a rare alcoholic drink! (this one is a Czech product)

From my "Galls" collection.
In reply to ysal, 6 months ago

Galls on plants are often caused by tiny wasps which lay eggs in some part of a plant, causing the plant to form a swollen area which then serves to feed and protect the wasp's developing baby.

Most of these wasps utilize just one species of plant. Here in California, we have a number of them who seek several different oak species. So these pictures are of different plant species, each one with a different wasp which seeks only that plant, one wasp species per plant species:

These are the largest and most spectacular, looking like luscious apples. Later they dry to a tan - and much later turn black, making the tree look ugly.

Here is one with the discarded shells of two hatchlings - sort of like mineature Cicada husks:

There are lots of smaller galls on different Oak species, each with it's own kind. Here are two different ones, each about 1/4" wide:

Not always Oaks! Here's one on a poplar leaf - this particular kind is always just like this - at the base of the leaf:

The galls don't seem to harm the trees much - the poplar leaf fell with the rest, in the fall.
