Price:

  • Nikkor: 1600
  • Sony: 1200
  • Canon: 2200

Yep, Sony is slower but also much cheaper.

So why is everyone ganging up on Sony? Sony comes close to the Canon zoom and its half the price.
Seems that many people just love to complain isn't it?

Why don't you compare it to D800E & 5DMKIII? That test makes no sense

Well you need to give the Nikkor some credit and compare its performance on a full-frame Nikon like the D600 or D800, that puts it in the same league as the others (actually it's the best of the bunch on the D800). Your comparison on the 2008  12MP D300 is useless.

Try these bodies instead...

You have picked too different of bodies to compare those lenses on, no idea why you did that. You should pick D800 at least for Nikon lens, but that will still not be as sharp since it has the AA filter vs no filter on 800E or A7R.

DXO shows okay corners at 24mm, which I don't know of anyone who has experienced this. So either almost all the lenses are faulty in the initial batch leading to soft corners, or maybe they are doing something different with their test?

Neither the real world samples I took nor the test chart mirror what DXO is showing for that lens.

Notice Sony is lowest scoring of 3, but not by much. Look at the "Measurements" -> "Distortion" -> "Maximum" tab, that is fun. I don't care about distortion correction, but worth noting on size/weight/cost of the lens.

Also, it is generally okay if an f/2.8 lens is a bit soft at the edges, but for an f/4 lens to not be sharp at the edges and not improve stopping down, this is not okay.  An f/4 lens is not an indoor lens and likely going to be used for landscapes etc.

so I don't pay too much attention to these reviews. I prefer to see pictures from the lens' owners.

Also, I note that DXO have not reviewed the other much-maligned lens in this forum----my Zeiss 16-70/4 OSS. I don't care----the IQ is simply outstanding!

Cheers,

José

Actually, the more telling comparison is probably that on the crop sensor bodies since they will stress the lens more (at least in the central region):

This link might not be working right, I did the D7100 vs NEX 7 vs 700D (or any of the Canon crop sensors with higher MP).

To be honest, in your case it is more from being a good photographer than a good lens.  I haven't tested the 16-70mm f/4 so have no idea on its performance.

There are people out there looking for the best value for the dollar, or that use a lens a certain way where the review can be helpful.  I do think people get too tied up in review information (and I am guilty of doing reviews to help this)

Maybe my expectations are too high for what a 24-70mm f/4 lens for full frame should be capable of, but I would rather set people's expectations low and have them pleasantly surprised, rather than suffering buyers remorse when their $1200 lens isn't that much better then a kit lens in terms of image quality.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for your comments.

I think if I was getting an A7 I would buy this Zeiss 24-70/4 for sure and it's almost by default. Not just I have favourable experience with my other Zeiss lenses but it's the fastest (f/4)native zoom out there and it can do 24mm which is great for travel. Not that it matters here but the reason I'm staying in the 1.5 format because there's no zoom (premium or otherwise) in FE that can go 24-105/4. For FE, I guess it's nice to partner the Zeiss with the Sony 70-200/4 G.
