I think people expected a bag of primes from this zoom. And to be lightweight. And small.

Can't have it all. I'd rather correct distortion and vignetting in PP.

Only user reviews (not centered on charts and brick walls) tell you about how the lens draws, and the convenience of gettings OSS on a mid range zoom lens.

Klaus at Photozone will be posting his review today I think.

i'm conflicted. It's small, light and decently contrasty. But I do have images that are not as sharp as i'd like, where it isn't my fault.  I'm finding myself imagnin the sharpness map and trying to get a key element of the image in the sharp zone - which is distracting and limiting on composition.

What I don't know is how technically feasible it would have been to make it much better at the price keeping the form factor...

Yikes...

Doesn't look too good to my eyes for full frame. I have no idea why Sony would launch this thing at that price point. I suspect we will be seeing this lens deeply discounted.

Well I think the SLRGEAR review is unduly harsh when you look at their own graphs. Yes the lens is weak in the corners at 24mm, but if you compare it in the following graphs at 35mm and 50mm and f/4 with the corresponding primes it actually does very well.

If the expected 16-35mm f/4 does well at the wide end then these two lenses will make a good complementary combination.

Maybe that's SONYs plan... a lot more people are keen to buy the 16-35 if the 24's corners are weak

It's about what I expected. Compare it to the Canon 24-70 f4L IS (the quality it should've been).

Results consistent with my experience

I was really looking forward to the 24-70mm and got one of the first ones at Samy's Camera in California, USA.

Sadly, my results were similar to the slrgear review.  Their review is formal but it is consistent with my photo results.

I was sufficiently disappointed that I returned the lens.  I have owned many Zeiss designed lens over the years and this one, at its price point, was the only one I was left with a disappointed feeling.

I wish I would not have sold my Contax-Zeiss 35-70mm.

I'd be happy if it just matched the sharpness of the Tamron 28-70. The Zeiss here is not even close. Yes, I know the Zeiss has some good qualities that the Tamron may not have, but I'm not really looking for a "character" lens in a 24-70 zoom. Perhaps the wide angle zoom will be better.
