An Abomination.

No slideshow, constant intrusive icons and arrows.  A complete cockup.

Ray...
In reply to Ray Sachs, 4 months ago

I've been a Flickr user for almost 8 years now, and have around 25,000 images posted there. There are things I love about Flickr, like the incredible value it offers, and the outstanding groups and forums.... and there are things I don't like so much, like the "photostream" concept of always putting your latest upload on top.

But overall, it is a a cheap and convenient way to store photos online, even if it isn't a good site for portfolio display.

One thing about Flickr is they are constantly changing to "improve" which lately seems to mean "become more like facebook and twitter." They even changed the label for "contacts" to "people I follow" to be more trendy.

In the eight years I have been a member they have redesigned their interface four times, and each time they make it more difficult to post Flickr photos elsewhere without actually linking back to a Flickr page so they can display their advertising to more people. But each time there is always a workaround, you just have to find it.

And you found it yourself. You just have to take THEIR link and trim it down to the basic URL for the photo.

For example... when I go to this photo, I will find a little arrow pointing upwards that says "share this photo." If I select the HTML version, then click it, I get this text:

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/marty4650/13277173804" title="12P3150065 by Marty, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7249/13277173804_0fe3fe4a14.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="12P3150065"></a>

This text will work only when you post the photo in a Flickr discussion group. For everywhere else, you need to post something different. And that means just the URL from the above:

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7249/13277173804_0fe3fe4a14.jpg

Notice... the line must end with .jpg in order to use on Dpreview. Then you insert that text into the "insert image from the web" option and you get:

I hope you're right, Marty, but I see no way to get the slideshow from the current layout.

Thanks Marty. You actually don't even need to hit the "insert image from the web" button - if you just paste the right link into the text, DPR will recognize it as a legitimate link and present you with a button next to the text to embed the file. Works great. It's just more difficult to get to that string now than before, as noted.

I basically agree with you. I don't really have a problem with Flickr at all. I don't think the changes have necessarily made it worse - just different. I only get bugged when I can't do something I could do previously. This is one of those - I can still do it, but it's more hassle than it used to be...

There's a slideshow icon in the upper right of your photo-stream view or of any set you've pulled up. No more difficult than before...

Groan.  Actually need to go to the help page to decipher the slideshow controls, which I did.  Thank you gentlemen!

Very difficult to post photos to DPR or other forums. I use it to store images, that's all. The changes are not user friendly.

Here's a photo I posted to my Flickr photo stream yesterday:

Murano, Venice

It seems to be no more difficult than before once you learn where they moved things on the user interface.

Groan. Actually need to go to the help page to decipher the slideshow controls, which I did. Thank you gentlemen!

And it seems to still be a cheesy animated kind of a slideshow, zooming in and out and panning around in a completely arbitrary manner.

It's as if they have decided that people's pictures can be regarded as some kind of generic interchangeable wallpaper. Now some people may love that idea, of course; but others are very likely to object - perhaps strenuously.

So one has to wonder who thought this such a good idea, as to impose it without giving the option.

Yuck -

and worse still, my Flickr payment renewed itself recently, before I could get round to stopping it....

Yes, the dreaded Ken burns effect.  You can set it for the normal Flicker slideshow with a right click on the Slideshow button, then Open Link in New Window, which brings up the old slideshow with filmstrip below and options.  Oy!

Thanks, I didn't spot that option. Much better IMO.

Now if only it didn't show a rogue line of pixels along the bottom when the browser is set full-screen... well, we can't have everything we want at once in this world, I suppose - we'd only get ungrateful

Seems like this happens every time Flickr is mentioned.  Those who don't like it probably ought to not go to that site so they can avoid excessive blood pressure spikes.  We're talking about a basic health issue here!

Those who like it, and those who don't mind it, you are making those people sick! Show some compassion, for God's Sake, and change your online photo publishing site!

Oh! The HUMANITY!

I'm not a big fan of it myself. BUT, I think it'll work out eventually. Flikr seem to have the bad habit of releasing a redesign before the bugs are worked out. Give it a few weeks and it will probably be a lot more legible and use-able.
