I've had my D3s shutter replaced and Nikon did not reset the shutter count. Colleagues of mine who have had shutters replaced more than once (on the same cameras) have never had their shutters reset either (through NPS.) The shutter is only one mechanism that gets wear and the total shutter count is also an indication of overall use. But if you're concerned about this when selling the camera, just show the buyer the work order which will be dated as to when the shutter was replaced.

Otherwise, it can be kind of misleading as to overall camera usage to reset shutter counts. It's somewhat like resetting the odometer on a car. Normally you'd tell the buyer the miles on the chassis and also the miles on the new engine.

Anyway, this question was asked several years ago http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/2681063  (read to the very end for the most current responses.)

In a recent thread on shutter count resets, a couple of fellows pointed out that Nikon now has a policy not to reset. Think this was USA but might be everywhere.

Why not ask them to RESET the shutter when sending it in? Seriously put it in the instructions and threaten to send it back to them if it wasn't done. New shutter = zeroed shutter count IMO. Maybe they didn't replace the shutter?

If your 2012 BMW with 450,000 miles on the odometer had it's motor replaced by BMW,will they reset your odometer to ZERO??  NOPE

When it's said like this it's easy to understand why they don't....

Sounds a bit illegal also.

Why should it matter. All that matters for resale would be proof that the shutter was replaced and when.

I do not think it should be reset and I'm glad Nikon Canada didn't.
