I stumbled on the model world of Michael Smith and it really raises a few interesting points.

Why 3MP is better than 6MP, why old lenses are better than new... it really is a different world. It has me intrigued that fewer pixels are better for this kind of thing.

Ya he needs low details because a good camera gives away they're just toys.

I doubt there are many scenarios out there where people want crappy pictures to make their work look good. This guy is an exception apparently. That, or he's super poor and uses that as an excuse

Re: Small world

Maybe the smaller sensor gives a greater depth of field... You'd want that for this sort of thing.

Re: Small world

He actually says its the lens character of his older 3MP camera that made for better images:

I had a 3 megapixel camera that took better “vintage” photos because the lens wasn’t that good. Actual old camera lenses caused a mild blur in the photos, and it’s that blur that holds the key to the look of the past; at least for me. The blur ads emotional distance and mystery to the photograph.

I have a Helios 44K-4 lens that I use for regularly for similarly for its lovely character, the 44 series lenses are actually a copy of a Zeiss design from the 1930s. The Helios is crazy sharp over most of the frame though, allowing for a bit of field curvature. Old lenses can be great lenses indeed!

Nice images, what a lot of work, but if he enjoys it, why not.
