Go to>Menu>Last Column (Travel Case/Brief)>Line 6>Setting Reset>Down to Initialize>Restore to default>OK...then install Firmware...

Initialise back to factory settings prior to installing Firmware and you will not have any issues...

I did not do this and had no issues with the update.

Is there a reason to do this? Or a better safe than sorry sort of thing?

Is this official advice from Sony?

What reasons do you have to believe that this will eliminate any potential issues with the update?  I'd much rather not have to reset to factory settings.

It didn't occur to me and mine worked fine, startup is very fast. Maybe others have had abort issues?

It happens on Sony's, Oly's and Panny's at times, reinitializing to factory settings will usually do the trick...

What setting do you think the camera is at, at the factory when they test the firmware update?

Good advice.  I will record all changes from default.  Then do on that approach.

Is there a way to save all changes to SD card and to restore from card later that some cameras have that feature?

Honestly, I expect them to smarter than just testing from a fresh camera. The last thing they need is for the update to fail for everyone because they only tested a clean camera.

I read in a Thom Hogan review that you cannot save settings.

I would say so as well, but a initialized camera is a sure bet...

Not that I know of, like some are saying you can do it with your custom sets, and it worked, if it doesn't then Initialize and retry...

Fair enough and thanks for the input. It doesn't sound like this is based on specific incidences for this camera at this time so much as a past track record.

When you install the firmware, at step "11",

you are asked to

"reset device" and answer OK, so , no chose no ?

I did as it's written, "OK".

firmawre installed, camera off,  battery out, camera on, and I loose no settings !

Let's see, follow Sony's instructions carefully or something I got from the forums?  For me, following the maker's instructions always worked best and I don't have to remember any camera settings from before = everything worked fine.  Thanks for the advice though.

Cheers.

I had a few scary moments in the upgrade process.  On the initial attempt it aborted and after that it seemed the device was bricked.  A few aborted attempts later I realized that I had forgotten to remove the SD card. Once I removed that it worked without a hitch- I followed all of the other instructions from Sony exactly.
