RAAF Centenary of Military Aviation 2014 Airshow
7 months ago

I managed to get to the Centenary of Military Aviation Airshow at RAAF Base Williams, previously RAAF Base Pt Cook in my day when I joined the RAAF in 1971 on the RAAF's 50th birthday.

The show celebrated to the day the first flight of a military aircraft in Australia when a Bristol Boxkite got airborne as part of the fledgling Australian Flying Corp (AFC) which was part of the Australian Army. The RAAF was formed after WW1 in 1921.

The show was punctuated with sunshine after a gloomy day on the Saturday (the sun did appear after the show finished in typical Victorian style!). However after a similar gloomy start on the Sunday, we all managed a dose of sunburn on Sunday.

The highlight was the public flight of the Bristol Boxkite replica on day 2. It flew the length of runway 17/35 after considerable deliberation about the wind strength. A spectacular sight.

Historical aircraft included Tiger Moths, Sopwith Pup, Mustangs, MkVIII Spitfire, P40 including one with a RR Merlin engine, Meteor, CAC Avon Sabre, C47 Dakota, Catalina and DHC Caribou.

The show included aircraft types from throughout the RAAF's history with flypasts from various era or campaigns up to the current force of F/A-18F, F/A-18A, KC-30, Wedgetail, P3C, C130J, and C17. Even a flypast of four King Air 350 that were very tight and something different to the regular airshow participants.

For some unknown reason the Army only parked their Tiger and MRH90 helps.

The RAAF Museum even dragged out the F111C. I would have much preferred to see the Mirage IIIO dragged as well to park beside the Hornet as the two longest serving fighter types in the RAAF's history.

For the weekend I equipped myself with two D4 bodies and my trusty D800E fitted with 200-400, 500 (sometimes with TC14) and 70-200. My son shot with my D3s and 80-400 AF-S which performed perfectly.

Bristol Boxkite landing straight ahead......

It does fly.....the Bristol Boxkite airborne.

CAC Avon Sabre

F/A-18A Hornet dropping flares to ward off IR threats.

Boeing Wedgetail with Surf Board on the roof! More like a toaster!

F/A-18F Rhino Hornet at 8g

F/A-18F Rhino Hornet at high alpha

F/A18-F Rhino Hornet in high g turn

F/A-18F Rhino Hornet pulling up

F/A-18A 'Classic' Hornet

F/A-18A 'Classic' Hornet

F/A-18F Steroid Hornet nudging the number in pull-up, with shockwave.

4 ship of F/A-18A Hornets from No 3 'Big Tank' SQN

A magnificent series John, of those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines.

Air Shows are a test of anyone's metal, men and machines, flying and photographic.

I live not far from our Richmond Air Base and used to attend air shows with great trepidation, happy if I got one or two keepers. You don't have a bad shot amongst these.

Love the Hornet shots especially, take my breath away.

Thanks Lance.

I'm still sorting out what I need to send to the editor.  Shot around 2000 images.

The D800 performed very well even at 700mm with the 500 fitted with the TC14.  AF was right on and never slow.  Only the fps was slow.

The highlight for me is always the fighter types of course having spent over 12 years flying them.

I wish I knew it was on as I may have tried to get to see it.

My brother was in the airforce and was at Williamtown in the mid to late 80's, a Flight Leiutenant at that stage from memory, but I think went on to be a Wing Commander. He has now left the services.

Lance, I was at Willy from more or less 1977 through to 1989 except for tours at Butterworth between 1979-1983 (75 and 3SQN) having spent most of my time at Willy in 77 and 2OCU on the Mirage, Macchi and Hornet  as well as 76 on the Reserve on the Macchi.

Many of the images and videos that I shot for the RAAF in that time are still used today.

I now live near Amberley although you can't get near that place these days as it's grown so much and security tightened a bunch.

I heard about the show through my editor and the RAAF web site.  Next stop is Avalon next year.  I may have also got myself a new assistant as well but lost the use of D3s and 80-400 in the process though!

Re: RAAF Centenary of Military Aviation 2014 Airshow - older types
In reply to Jabs767, 7 months ago

A few more of the older types.

The show was extremely well supported by the warbird fraternity in Australia with aircraft being flown in from all over the country especially from Woolongong, Tyabb and Temora.

The biggest problem shooting these older types was during this time of day, it was mainly badly backlit.  The cloud cover helped a little but gave flat backgrounds of yuck......

A memorable gallery of classic aircraft, so many favorites among them, and so many different "characters". The modern air frames just don't have the same individuality, do they?

Great shooting!

My perennial favorite footage and some of the best cinematic sequences on celluloid in a feature film, remain for me, the opening sequences in "Catch 22", I was blown away when I first saw it on the Panavision screen in a darkened theatre in 1970. About the time you were flying, from your accounts.

Really great stuff John - amazing shots. I have to say I do prefer the older style aircraft - the spitfire, mustang & catalina are absolute classics. They're like the '60's & '70's muscle cars of the air. Were there no mosquitos or lancasters - that would have completed the list

• Nikon D800E • Nikon Df • Nikon D700 (2) • Nikon D7100 • Nikon D7000 • Nikon D90 (2) • Nikon D80 • Nikon D70s • Hasselblad H3DII-39 • Fuji X100 LE • Canon G15

Pat,

Yeah the backgrounds on Saturday weren't very good.  Typical Melbourne weather just like Avalon also at that time of year.

Sunday was much better but if you look closely, some of the better shots were actually taken on the practice on the Friday.

Thanks again.

John,

Another awesome set of images from you.  Looks like those Aussies are much better at putting on a show than here in the land of Sequester.  Hopefully one of these days we can finally hook up and shoot together.

Looking forward to seeing more of your shots.

Glenn

What practice on Friday!!!!

Could any one attend the Friday practice season or was it invite only. If I had of known about that I would of been there.

Oh well I will have to make do with the lousy shots I got.

Once again great work from your self.
