Show Your Favorite Image Captured With Your 70-400mm G / G2
4 months ago

Try to make this a learning and sharing of techniques thread.

There have been a lot of threads about the Sony 70-400mm G and G2 lens. This happens to be one of my favorite lenses. I use the 70-400mm G for many different type of photography (i.e. BIF, Air Shows, Flowers, static, high speed action, distant and close-ups). The lens is one of the most versatile I use and I always use it hand held (never on a tripod).

It would be fun to see some of your favorites taken with the 70-400mm G / G2 (beginning or advanced - it doesn't matter). It would also be interesting to share, ask and answer questions about usage and techniques for types of photography with the 70-400mm G (I am only an enthusiast but will share what I have learned).

Over the past four years I have captured many thousands of images with this lens. Four years ago in February I received my 70-400mm (I remember it was on a Wednesday) and I was wondering what the heck I was going to use it for and that same afternoon I received a call from a friend asking me to go to Florida for a week to shoot BIF. I had never photographed BIF before but I said OK and we spent the next six days (10 hrs per day) in the preserves photographing BIF (I learned a few things about using my lens).

Below are some of my favorites from the 70-400mm G.

Thanks Sam, those are awesome.

I don't think I have ever seen a bird like the first image.  I see both images are shot at f/5.6 (you must have taken extra care about the focus).  I assume both of these images was hand held.  The detail and color on these birds is beautiful.

Beautiful images and thanks for sharing.

Spectacular set Bill.  Colors on the heron are awesome as is sharpness plus that little splash is icing on the cake.  Also really like the Bluejay in flight.

Dang, I love that bear, yeah I'm jealous of that one...........................

That's definitely a favorite. I understand why that one's shot at 400mm.

The Elk is also amazing.  I like the time of morning the image was shot and the dark upper background.  The action makes it a favorite.

I will plan to PM you about Yellowstone. I haven't been there in over 35 years but plan to visit for 12 days in June. Actually we have talked about splitting the 12 days between Yellowstone and Rocky Mountain National Park but I think we would be better off spending the entire time between the Tetons and Yellowstone (just too much to cover).

Please be ready to help answer any questions about using your 70-400mm.

Thanks

Wow! That bear is something! ISO-1600 too. Also, the Sandhills in flight are special - very sharp and nice against the light background.

Ed Thanks for comments.

I don't remember if you have the 70-400mm G/G2 but if you do this should be a fun thread so join in with a favorite or two.

Thx, yeah both are handheld

My copy of Sony 70-4000mm G1 has always been focusing very accurate, and since it's almost prime-sharp wide open too, I have almost always used it wide open.

Wow, advancing quickly.  I love images with action and people (first image has both and it is interesting).

If the second image (leopard) were cropped it could look like it was in the wild (nice image and you can do a lot with it in post).

Your seventh image again contains action (that guy standing up makes it interesting).

Great job and keep them coming.  I know the 70-400mm G will be one of your favorite lenses.

Thanks for sharing.

While that Leopard is very cool, I think I like the shots of the Meerkat the best.  Looks like you're getting it dialed in.

In reply to Ed at Ridersite, 4 months ago

Ed, thanks for joining the fun.  All your images as usual are beautiful but that Red Fox blows my mind.  I want so much to find a Red Fox in the wild.

One thing I notice about all your images is the relatively slow shutter speed (at least slower than some have recommended).  You might expect some questions about your selection of shutter speed and technique (I can see it sure works for you).  Even the humming bird at 1/400 sec (I think you may have explained to me that the humming bird hovers - thus can capture with slower shutter).  Also all other birds are static so slow shutter would work (except need to hold lens steady).

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing a favorite.

Very nice image with beautiful colors and saturation.  This like some others has action of the turtles (which draws interest).  I looked at your image 100% and the subject turtles are nice and sharp.  I also notice your shutter speed of 1/400 sec which I use a lot for subjects like this. I also notice you are at 400mm and wide open at f/5.6 (very nice use of the lens).

Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, I love to take action shots too. But I also like close ups. Apart from having to get used to the weight, it sure is great and love the colour it produces. I can't imagine how much better G2 can be.

Simplistic image but the colours are nice
