28-70 Kit vs 24-70 on A7

I thought I'd share some comparison pics I took with each of these lenses. All are handheld with OSS on. Focus is in center for all. I shot in A priority and some of the shutter speeds are different so difference in exposure. I'm very happy with the results and IQ improvement over the kit lens.  I think I have a good copy of the 24-70 but would be interested in comments.

Kit lens seems to be holding up quite well in comparison.....especially on a IQ per dollar basis.

I use manual focus lenses with my A7 but the kit lens is handy enough to have and IQ is useable for all but the most demanding uses I think.

Thank you for sharing those results;actually i think that this picture does not show the optical differences between the two lenses. It's a pic that you can take  with both lenses. it shows for sure that the 28-70 is a good kit lens. But the zeiss I think need other considerations, don't you think?

The corner is much better with 24-70.  The corner sharpness is very good with 24-70.

With my copy, I am not impressed with the corner sharpness of the 24-70mm f/4 at all. It seems decent enough by 50mm, but don't think it is much different than the 28-70mm overall.  The issue is, my good copy of the 28-70mm I had to send back to return a broken A7, and my current copy is maybe a bit average.

I need to check on the A7, but on the A7R it has pretty strong green cast to the corners/edges and soft corners at most settings before 50mm or so.  Doing side by side with my current 28-70mm and it is better, but still feels like a kit lens.  I think 28-70mm on A7 is about like 24-70mm on A7R.  The build quality of the 24-70mm f/4 is very nice though.

Looking more at the green cast in the corners, it is aggravated by uncorrected vignetting, even with vignetting correction on, quite a lot remains, so if I manually correct the lens for vignetting, the green cast isn't very noticeable.  In Lightroom I can apply a radial filter that increases temperature in the corners a bit and it nicely corrects this.

I hope the Lightroom profile for the 24-70mm is available soon, it would make me like the lens a lot more.  I can't even test it at 70mm yet since the distortion is too high for my chart...

My comments was just based on pictures in the original post.  I don't have the lenses or A7 or A7r.

It's much better than the 28-70 but it is still not that amazing on the wide end.

If your not happy with it why not consider swapping it for another copy. Is it still the same with I.S switched off?

I see a considerable difference between the two.  The 24-70 clearly has more punch overall, even viewed at screen level and not 1:1.  Look at the chain link fence in the first photographs.  The 24-70 looks quite a bit sharper.  Whether it is worth the extra difference in cost is another issue.

I got this lens yesterday and I am resisting comparing with the kit lens as I don't expect a huge difference and therefore won't be disappointed, that said I think curiosity will get the better of me!

I think often the differences in lenses are never as great as we expect, for example I had the Canon 24-70 f2.8 MKII and compared it to the Tamron with VC which was less than half the price and for most of the time the IQ was much the same, unless you pixel peep.

My take is, just knowing you have the best available and the build is better, and you get 4mm wider for me is worth the extra, particularly with the  7R.

I am a zoom guy and therefore I have no options, however if a 24mm prime arrives then it may be a different storey for some people.

Either lens will take good images, and both will rely on PP to maximise the end result.

Thanks! To my eyes there's a massive difference. The kit lens looks a bit blurry and smudged on the left side where as the 24-70 is actually pretty decent on the far left side.

Thanks for posting this.

It's not that I don't like the results. It's just for now the 24-70 is not worth $900 more to me than my kit lens. I might wait for a while and get one used.

In any event, my go to lens for a zoom is the Canon 17-40. The kit lens is fine for now, and if I need it, the EF 24-105, although slower and heavier, is a much better range.
