You probably underestimate the part of the users that want to be as discrete as possible and not walk around with an ostentatious pro looking DSLR with a big name.

Silver is mainly good for weddings.

But I can understand that some people want a camera that best fit the colour of their skin and the style of their glasses.

I like my red Nex-3.  I wish I could have gotten my Nex-5N in red.  Red says "toy" -- people are not scared by "toy cameras" (even if they are really real cameras, in disguise.

Re: A6000 colour: black or silver-ish ? Vote here :)

I voted black because:

  1. The silver finish doesn't match the aluminum silver lenses.
  2. There are more black lenses which don't look nice on a silver body.

Caveats:

  1. Scratches will be less visible with the silver body.
  2. We don't know how the silver plastic parts hold up.

If the lenses exactly matched the A6000 body color, and there were more silver lenses (35 f1.8, 10-18), than the silver version would be my choice.

While I prefer black, I just thought of a benefit: black absorbs more heat. Im places where shooting conditions could get very hot, silver or whatever it might be may have a slight edge.

I find that the plastic of the A6000 looks cheap because it's rather shiny, as compared to the classy matte surface finish of the plastic of the Sony RX100.

I agree with the previous poster who said retro is more disarming. A silver camera either looks like a point and shoot or a hip throwback, or even an old film camera. For street photography a silver camera is more "stealth" than a black one. And of course a regular DLSR with a big lens is the worst.

For events, parties, and even model photo shoots you'd also benefit from a less intimidating looking silver retro camera

Re: A6000 colour: black or silver-ish ? Vote here :)

I know this is a bit older thread but I wanted to add to it. I think this is a matter of opinion and while I dislike "colors" in cameras; I think if you, as a mfg, want people to take your system seriously, offering it in any color but black and white is a no-no; you can not go wrong with either color. I dont think either color black or silver makes any difference in shooting style. I have read the comments on silver looks less pro, and thus more discrete, or the flip side that silver stands out more. IMO, neither stick out more, its a tiny camera, that all there is too it. So far I love having this tiny camera, its with me always now. ***im a little disappointed Sony released the a6000 in white, but at least its not red, blue, brown and pink.

My color choice? I like Silver Body with Black lenses. I ordered the body only in silver than bought myself black lenses. (although the 35 1.8 stay on almost all the time)

To me, it reminds me of my AE-1 in silver metal with black accents, and black lenses. I love the modern retro look

Along with the style aspect, this is precisely the reason I'm going for the "silver" one. It doesn't show scratches as well. If the black one scratches, it will reveal some hideous metal underneath, while the silver one is metal throughout.

This is incorrect.  I have the silver a6000 and after just a weekend of use the supplied Sony strap had rubbed off the silver colour on the top corners.  The silver on the the little stud feet on the bottom has rubbed of after 1 months of use revealing the black colour, and some of the silver has rubbed of on the bottom corner.  Also the bottom left corner of the screen has rubbed off a little revealing off white colour underneath.

Shame beautiful camera, but the colour rubs off way to easily.

Silver colored plastic looks like DUNG after a year of use, the silver wears off showing what color plastic they used underneath.

When I was ordering my a6000 I wanted silver but it was not available in my location. Now that I have black I am glad I got black. I guess silver would have advantages in the sun for heat but disadvantages with being attention seeking for possible theft. I love the look of the white 70-200 paired with the black a6000.

Black Lens on Silver camera

... is what I think the best looking combination. I don't know why Sony choose to outfit the silver A6000 with a silver lens but it looks a lot better, IMO, with black lens.

You sure about that?

I was lucky in that I first saw the black and the silver at the same time and in person I don't think there's any contest - the black looks much cheaper and generic IMO.

And personally I love the black lens/silver body look.

I'm so old I remember when camera manufacturers used to charge more for black cameras.  Black is now the standard, and it's become boring, that's why I went with old school silver!

I got black.

Ever since I saw nightmarish silver Canon Rebel XT - I decided - only black.

But choice is great.

I'd get rid of silver and introduce:

- cherry red

- navi blue

- white and black stormtrooper style
