Lovely series.  Gives me hope that Spring will one day arrive here in the frozen north!

First Daffodil of the Year
In reply to WhyNot, Feb 22, 2014

Hello all. A little experimentation with a 50+ year old lens that I just purchased. I am really liking the character of the Meyer 100 2.8 Trioplan. This lens is not very sharp wide open however this lens renders a lovely glow along with very unique OOF rendering style that I find very interesting.

I never knew that there were gardens on Alcatraz.  I'll have to check them out.  Outstanding captures with wonderful color.

One from the archives with the E-30, current garden shots still 2 to 3 months away.  Comments and criticism always welcome.

Original Backgrounds
In reply to Canadian Club, Feb 22, 2014

CC, those Daffs are up against an awful, bile yellow, rough surfaced stucco exterior wall of a mausoleum in a very large and expensively landscaped and planted cemetery. During flower season I occasionally go off about them having planted their expensive, pedigreed and hybrid roses against this awful wall. Daffs are up now, but the roses are setting buds. I have a nice collection of local skies, all taken by me, which I use for background when I have a photo with detracting background. I had to create a stem on the white one or it would look like it was floating in mid-air. Don't do hands and knees anymore, guts still healing. To bend over and use live view and flexible screen is painful enough. Daffs usually face sideways and down. Here are the original backgrounds.

Re: Current blossoms
In reply to Scott Whittemore, Feb 22, 2014

Scott, I got sick of ugly backgrounds long ago (see my answer to CC, above). The ZD 50mm macro had EC 14 1.4x teleconverter on it, too. Going back forty five years, I've had some great and expensive portrait lenses for weddings, all around 100mm like the ZD 50 Macro and this lens beats them all, by far. I did a friend's art collection for sale pix with it and he was astonished at the results. And he has a Nikon DSLR with a few lenses. Thanks for your kind comments. Rich

Thank you. The 50 had the Olympus 1.4x teleconverter on it. It doesn't seem to degrade the result one bit. Rich

A very effervescent picture, neat effect.  I did some reading on that lens, lots of people after one.  Beautiful piece, too.  Made with only three lenses, it says.  I hope I don't want one.  Is yours a screw mount with converter?  Rich

Thank you Rich for your comments.

I have to say this lens is quickly becoming one of my favorites. This is a lens that you just go out and experiment with to see what kind of magic you can produce. This lens is a beautiful piece for sure. The copy I had had a lot of internal dust and I was able to take the lens fully apart with my bare hands and a spanner wrench to give all three elements a full cleaning. Very simple and effective design. I have the m42 (screw type) mount which is the one to have for mounting to FF DSLRs. The cheaper exakta mount version, in most cases, will mount to a cropped DSLR.

Beautiful set of pictures.. Your flowers seem to be further along than ours, but we should have daffodils next week; but, if that next polar jet next week drops this far down it could be delayed......That 14-150 seems to be a very versatile lens and I'm impressed with your control of the DOF on that bee...

Nice shot... interesting OOF pattern. Our daffodils should be here next week or maybe even one this weekend if it stays warm...

Nice red and green.. Your picture got us reading about the plant and we'll probably give this a try in our garden...we can always use the useful bugs, bees and butterflies that it attracts...our only problem is finding enough sun for it...
