Re: Some analysis
In reply to wisep01, 5 months ago

Here's a list of gear that I see bashed on here regularly, not just the 58. Ready?

Df - obviously. 90% of all threads here are about the Df haha.
D800 - left focus points, green tint, files are too big, only the D800e is good etc.
D600 - oil spots
D610 - oils spots
D4 - just not good enough to upgrade from D3s, save your money, etc
35 1.4G - a cheaper Sigma exists therefore this lens is bad
85 1.4G - 85 1.8 is just as good, so save your money, also a Sigma is out there. The 85 1.4G is just for people with too much money
The 50 1.4G - the 50 1.8 is better somehow, plus Sigma, so you know the drill.
35 1.8G - no one know much about it yet, but Sigma, so stay away
24-70 - too big, heavy and expensive. Not good for walking around
All tilt shifts - not as good as Canon
And of course the 58, which again, is brand new, and very few people have owned or tried.

The long lenses that you say are viewed favorably are rarely mentioned on this site because pros of that caliber do not often post here.

There was a time
In reply to PaleRiderBath, 5 months ago

There was a time when people were polite and helpful. A time before before internet sites that carried forums. I used FIDO and newsgroups before places like this ever existed. The rule was that if you couldn't be polite, you said nothing. Even the early days of forums were pretty decent. People seemed to, some how lose the ability to discuss and disagree on a subject without becoming rude. It's like being rude will up the ante and win the discussion.

If you want to dwell on the negative, you're correct.  However, there is a very, very easy option.  Don't read or post on those threads.  Be selective, only join a conversation you are interested in and has the level of technical expertise and emotional maturity that you feel comfortable with.

You won't be replying to every thread and if that is a problem, consider Twitter or similar.  The signal to noise ratio around here isn't great - it's not all that bad either.

You must have been on very different newsgroups then the ones I frequented

Even the early days of forums were pretty decent. People seemed to, some how lose the ability to discuss and disagree on a subject without becoming rude. It's like being rude will up the ante and win the discussion.

That, I would say is either a case of very selective memory or nostalgia painting over the cracks

Back in the 80's I helped out on a local photo magazine, one of the chores you had to endure as a rookie in the editorial environment was to sift through the letters sent to the magazine. That was when I first realized there is a lot of very angry people using cameras ... But there was also a lot of very helpful people, some witty, a few downright crazy ones ... In all, a mix of high and low, good and bad, positive and negative.

In the 90's I did work a lot with software translation (localization), systems testing and system administration, and ended up following a number of computer related usernet newsgroups. And there was a lot of wonderfully helpful people, but also a fair amount of trolls, ignorant people and some oddly angry ones. But overall a mix.

Now since 2004-2005 I have been following a number of forums here at Dpreview, this one in particular. And to no surprise at all - here is a mix of wonderfully helpful people, quite a few witty and funny ones, many knowledgeable and interesting ones, and - as always - also a number of trolls, misfits, angry people and some who have no bad intentions, but lacks the social skills to behave in a forum. Overall, a mix. As usual, and as always, regardless of technology used to make people discuss things they are passionate about.

Do you know which is the most vicious 'forum' I have ever seen? A stereo/hifi newsgroup a friend of mine followed back in the late 90's ... That was a nasty place who make Dpreview look like a kindergarten But between the flame wars and brawls, it was also filled with a lot of useful information and worth the trouble. Also some of the mailing lists/news groups for BSD/Unix/Linux people have had periods where you really needed a thick skin ...

Someone else wrote that forums like these tend to turn a bit nasty whenever there is a period of little news and people are bored. That matches my experiences too. And there are always periods when there are bad news as well ... Anyone remember the D200 banding discussions? Or the DX vs fullframe discussions back when D2x and D2H was Nikons top cameras? Things like this come and go, don't worry to much about it.

Hmmmm.... let me see... quality control issues in the $3000 products range, incongruences/missing cameras in Nikon's FF lineup, price policy (e.g. Nikon Df), etc. To summarize: I cannot stop myself to notice the elephant in the room: a confused greedy Nikon company. And that's triggering all kind of emotional approaches to address the problem.

You seem to forget Nikon was hurt by the earthquakes in Japan and the flooding in Thailand.

I cannot agree more.  Gear forums talk only about gears. If you look, say, Landscape forum, they talk about photography not gears. Gear people are not into taking photo, they just love their gears. I love Landscape forum, there are tons of nice people. Last year, I went to Europe and forgot my D700 charger, I posted an emergency help. A guy in Delft  lent me his D700 charger. Earlier this month, I wanted to know the exact point of certain area in Tuscany, I posted the photo, and sure a guy gave me the exact coordinate. People in Landscape forum are just amazing people.

This is the purpose of the forum:

  • To maximise traffic to Dpreview in order to maximise advertising revenue.
  • That's it.
  • No really, that's it.

This is not a forum for photographers. Moderation is very poor. Threads are full of testosterone fueled arguments about minor details, or the feature set of current and future cameras.

The truth is that any fool can own a camera. And owning a camera is the entrance fee, though many here do not even own a Nikon FX camera.

The forum should be about problem solving and education. But look at the photo galleries of the most argumentative posters and you see they care little for photography given the low quality of their pictures. If they spent more time learning and less time fighting, they would improve.

For the life of me I don't understand this rationale being defined as a FACT. I'm sitting here looking at $16,000 worth of Nikon bodies, lenses, flashes and assorted accessories. Granted many others here own quite a bit more than me, but I salute them for that and have absolutely zero jealousy. This is just your typical 1% argument that human nature dictates you MUST be green with envy towards those with more possessions/materials goods than yourself and that this "1%" has accumulated all their wealth and possessions by ripping off the 99%. For a few on these forums this may apply, and it is probably obvious who they are.

But for anyone to say that the majority here MUST be jealous because they don't own and shoot one particular Nikon body or lens is stupidity and is only intended to cause forum-chaos - plain and simple. This baloney has been perpetuated by one individual over and over and over again, so it looks like you've bought into his ignorance. And it has recently come to light that this looneytoon is only here to "dick" people around then go on facebook and have a good laugh with his buddies. IMHO, this is a blatant mockery of the forum and its moderator.

The people who do have the most expensive arsenal on this forum usually have the most knowledge of their gear. Their photographic skills may not always match their knowledge, but these pros contribute a great deal to this forum regarding Nikon and I have learned a lot from them. Most of them worked long, hard and smart to get what they shoot with and I commend them for it.

When you stated the "facts" as you see them, you really miss the point that this latter group of people NEVER brag about the monetary value of their gear and for the most part are here to help others. This group may be diminishing in numbers because of all the "dick'n" that has been going on recently, and that is sad. So when you say something is a fact, you should be saying it's just your opinion which I have stated about this post.

Implies that people disagree and argue just for the sake of it. I couldn't disagree more.

Actually I think it mirrors society as a whole in recent years. People don't like each other anymore, and are willing to fight over anything. They don't even need a believable excuse to start a vitriolic food fight.

In truth I think it's a result of lack of discipline, which use too be enforced by parents, and schools at one time. Those kids that grew up without fear of consequences are now adults, and what you see is what you get. For example when I was a kid if a teacher hit me the last thing I would do is report it to my parents, or further punishment would ensue. Basically we're living with a bunch of over indulged spoiled brat adults. You know their very sensitive delicate flowers when it comes to their own feelings though. That's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it.
