See Sony that's how it;s done. You don't need to announce release date or pricing, to make a camera announcement despite what some think. Well, that's if you have something to announce and your Marketing Department is good.

Panasonic just got the jump on Sony with the 4K announcment.

I guess they mean in this kind of camera? whatever a DSLM is ...  gopro has done 4K for a while at least and I'm sure Sony has camcorders that do.

This is why Sony doesn't give you its FREEKING ROADMAP People.

This camera is not even available for pre-order for over a month!

Who knows what Sony has coming in the next 4 weeks.

But sit down at a typewriter press send and you get to claim to be first .. especially if you know what is coming.

Odds are they got a hint of what Sony has coming and put out the announcement early to steal the "first"  because there is no event going on to force the early timing.

4K is just a gimmick like 3D and curved TV's ?
In reply to K E Hoffman, 7 months ago

I'm not convinced that 4K is the next  'big thing'

Until global broadcasters have lots of 4K content and more critically -  the means to broadcast 4K  -then nothing will drive the purchase of 4K TV's and therefore no-one will have anywhere to view their 4K videos....

I suspect 4K will be like 3D.

The TV manufacturers will make a huge fuss about it.... and the public will take little notice.

Of course no-one is going to mind having 4K in a camera - I guess its just a bit of possible  future proofing - but many cameras have 3D abilities and I bet almost no-one uses it.

Exactly, yes there is a shortage for 4K content. But it means that you can make good money on 4k video.

After this Panasonic announcement of 4K-capable Lumix DMC-GH4, more manufacturers will follow the trend, and soon people/we can shoot 4k without a huge investment. I believe now the 4k video is going to pick up really fast.

I suspect 4K will be like 3D.

I don't think so. The 3D didn't survive because it was too complicated to fit into the living rooms. The 4k video is just as simple as HD video, with much better quality. The biggest obstacle was the lack of affordable 4k-capapable cameras (which is solved now), The prices of 4k TV/devices are falling really fast too, and Lumix DMC-GH4 and similar cameras will provide the contents too.

The TV manufacturers will make a huge fuss about it.... and the public will take little notice.

You bet, this is where TV manufacturers will be making their money on coming years., and they will make sure that the public notice it, for sure. "Old" HD-TVs are going for dumping prices now, there is no profit there any longer

Of course no-one is going to mind having 4K in a camera - I guess its just a bit of possible future proofing - but many cameras have 3D abilities and I bet almost no-one uses it.

I believe many photographers/videographers will find a good reason to use 4k cameras, because there is a huge opportunity for making money.

I don't agree.  The HDTV market is saturated, and the 3D thing has always been a gimmick in my mind.  And I remember when 1080 content was no existent, abysmal, or awful stretched out standard definition (thankfully that's gotten better).  But if I can produce 4K content myself, and buy a quality display that I can (eventually) afford to drive it, personally I'm going to!  Otherwise it's like you're saying that, yup, 1080 is as good as it gets, we don't need it any better: mission accomplished, no more innovation needed.

Also, remember more and more content is being delivered on the web.  The broadcasters have more competition than ever to worry about.  When they ignore it they end up in situations like they are today, looking over their shoulders worrying about all the online offerings.

You see that article is not dismissing the 4k-video, it's complaining about the lack of 4k-contemt, as it's concluding with this line: " Right now, 4K is strictly for early adopters with plenty of cash.
Until Hollywood figures out a way to deliver significant amounts of 4K content to consumers, the rest of us can continue happily using our current HDTVs."

And that's exactly the point with affordable 4k-capable cameras. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 (and soon to follow) other 4K-capable cameras are actually addressing the concern of the article, if we believe the conclusion of this article. And that's exactly why these kind of affordable 4k-capaable camera are hot.

Its not just content -  its distribution, processing power, storage - all major issues that have to be addressed by people wanting to make and sell 4K - and if there are no end users apart from cinemas.....

4K files are HUGE.

They can't be just streamed, or sold on blu-ray discs, you also need a massive PC to process it...think about it....

I think 4K may have a long term future but for now only wealthy early adopters will buy into it.

From the BBC:

"We are years away from being able to make and transmit in 4K, yet it matters far more than 3D ever did: it enables manufacturers to focus on making bigger, better, normal TVs," Harrison says.

So it has a future..... in a few years.....

Sure.  But everything advances, and it's coming.  This is no exception.  It wasn't that long ago people couldn't imagine getting HD content over the web (same issues and obstacles then, too).  This is just part of that journey.

The storage is cheap in these days, that's no excuse.

The processing power is increasing daily. Even Tablets are aiming for 4k-content. As an example, the announced Nvidia Tegra K1 has dual 4K, and can drive a 4k panel and an external TV over HDMI too. Panasonic has announced a 20- INCH TOUGHPAD 4k tablet based on a on-the-shelf Intel i7-3687U processor, and on-the-shelf NVIDIA Quadro K1000M GPU, etc. When even the existing tablet-hardware is capable,  you can't make a case against 4k based on processing power.

Besides several new 4k-codecs (both hardware based and software based) are on the way, with main focus on reduced file-size for streaming. Google is pushing royalty-free VP9 4K video codec as H.265 alternative for YouTube. But H.265 is developing fast too.

There is no concern for 4k, but it's not entirely streamlined yet, because it's a new technology. But since it's the future, several Big-players are working really hard to streamline it.

I agree its coming..... but until the infrastructure to support it gets upgraded ( and in many countries that means legislation ) then the uptake will be very limited.

The cost of producing 4k will be massive for broadcasters and in the current economic climate they ain't gonna be rushing to spend on new gear for a teeny weeny audience.

Cinemas are already effectively at 4k anyway so they are not going to change much - and in fact I understand many film companies will resist too quick a domestic 4k market as it will undermine the cinema experience.

PC's will need powerful processors, masses of memory and huge hard drives.

A 2nd generation blu ray disc may be needed and the attendant player to go with it.

Yes I agree it will happen - but not soon. For many people HD is simply "good enough"

So going back to the original post I don't think Sony missed an opportunity - I suspect they want the whole 4K package - TV, Cameras, storage medium & player to be ready before they start trying to sell it to us.

Also my POV. Broadcasting this massive amount of data? Hardly with today's tecnology - at least for a broader public. Rental? Well, probably one would need to take an external HD to the store. So there are several technical problems to solve or things to improve until 4k video could gain some broader relevance.

As I've seen comments from some specialists that one needs really big screen to be able to really appreciate 4k-video in comparison to real actual 1080p content - and this could mean the need of bigger living rooms with larger walls for those mega TVs   I'm looking forward whether the marketing departments will really convince the consumers to go much beyond the actual TV sizes which already went up from the old 29" TVs to now most common sizes from 32" to 50".

It will be interesting to watch Apple - they don't usually sit idly by and watch a major change happen without trying to dominate the market.

I notice Apple did not rush into 3D or Blu Ray like many other tech companies did.....

The Op title makes no sense, Sony announced a 4k consumer camcorder a while ago.

And to the person that mentioned the 4k in the gopro its only a gimmick as it does only 15 frames per second at 4k, try watching footage at 15p and prepare for a headque.
