Welcome to the Weekly Close Up where up close and personal is how we like it.

Brad is off to places unknown so I am covering for his for a few weeks.

So lets see those wonderful close ups be they macro or not. I don't care how you got the shot or with what gear, just tell us so we know and if you are cropping.

Please reply to this as I will so no one gets lost in thread view.

No trip this year
In reply to JiminDenver, 8 months ago

A sick dog kept us from taking our usual tropical vacation this year so I will have to post from the archives. This is the only mantis I saw this year.

E 5, 35mm, EC 20 and foam ring flash.

Thanks for looking

Stuff From Cape Town.
In reply to JiminDenver, 8 months ago

I went to Butterfly World in Cape town with my grand daughter this week. I Don't normally do captive animals bu for the granddaughter we I made an exception.

I took the E-5 and the Sigma 105 and the 50-200 with the EX25

I have not used that lens for awhile and have forgotten how sharp that lens is. ( Its some times to sharp but that is a whole different thread. )

Butterfly world but few butterflies ( Was the wrong time of the year or something)

E-5 Sigma 105 f/2.8 Macro

This is a crop it about 25% of the original.

I also forgot how narrow the DOF is closer up.

E-5 + 50-200 + EX25 at 200mm

Well Jim, when I saw the Broncos on TV last weekend and it was 60 degrees F it wasn't at all what I imagined.  Looked like you had not needed a tropical vacation so far this year.  That mantis could have been out looking for prey in your garden then!  Not one of my favorite insects for some reason.  I think it is those eyes and the head that you captured in the second image.

If you turn that last butterfly clockwise, there's a very reptilian head at the wing tip.

Nice Collin
In reply to CollBaxter, 8 months ago

That slim DOF gave you very nice back grounds with the butterflies. I had the 70-300 and gave it away because if I wanted to shoot from a distance, the 50-200/ EX 25 is my choice.

They must use the same type butterflies as they use in the pavilion here because I'm sure I have some of the same shots. It is a treat occasionally to be able to take the time and get really close without having to chase them all over a field or fight the wind.

More practice (hand held technique) with the 35.

March can't come soon enough.

Some winters
In reply to 19andrew47, 8 months ago

Andrew

Some winters here are so mild that I do see some bees, wasp or flies on warmer days. (60 today) Unfortunately it wasn't that long ago that we were down to -15 and stayed below freezing for a week. Not much happening after that. lol

Daffodil, from today (Saturday, 1/21)
In reply to JiminDenver, 8 months ago

Panasonic L10 and ZD50 with EX25, 21 images stacked in Helicon Focus

I'm not entirely happy with this but heck, it's today's efforts, anyway. Camera was on a boom tripod with focusing rail and a cheapo ring light on the front of the 50. Light otherwise was raw sunlight. Cropped to about 2400x1800. F4 @ 1/500 (x21)

Especially since it'll be a month before we see any thing green around here.

Thanks for sharing

Really nice set, Collin. I especially like that last butterfly. The 50-200 is an excellent lens. I'm often surprised at its sharpness.

Nice sharp handheld shots without IS. I really love that first one -- skilled hands at work (subject and photographer alike).

I love those under water leaves but the quilt is particularly stunning.

Ok, next week, you sew and get your wife to post an image    Don't wish for March.  The way things are going here we might need April.

All are nice but I really love that last shot -- the underwater leaves. Very well seen and composed.
