This may not be pertinent as I only has the X100s for about 2 mos. as it had a defect and I decided to go smaller APSc, and CapOne was still experimenting.

I found the EVF to be very dark in daylight, almost not useable and used the OVF 99% of the time.

X100s - OVF 95% - EVF 5% - LCD 0

-- hide signature --

X-Pro1 w/ XF 35 mm - OVF 95% - EVF 5% - LCD 0

X-Pro1 w/ XF 18 mm - OVF 95% - EVF 5% - LCD 0

X-Pro1 w/ XF 14 mm - OVF 5% - EVF 95% - LCD 0

---------------------------------------------------

I'm fond of the OVF on these cameras, enjoy the 'gestalt' of using the optical finder.

The rub comes with the XF 14 mm (a great lens) - the intrusion into the view in the optical finder with this lens is such that the EVF works better for me with this lens.

95% OVF, 5% EVF
In reply to kevinschoenmakers, Jan 11, 2014

I bought both cameras for the hybrid OVF, and that's what I use the overwhelming majority of the time.

About 70% ovf, 25% evf and 5% rear lcd.

The advantage of the EVF is its WYSIWYG view. So I use it when parallax error might be a problem for focusing, and in low light where the OVF is too dim. Otherwise it's the OVF.

X100 (owned for nearly 3 years).

Mainly use EVF now. Progressed from mainly OVF and shooting jpg to mainly EVF and shooting RAW.

I would like an even better EVF but still like the OVF/EVF combo. Might use OVF more if the framing lines were accurate as I am fussy about composition plus seeing the exposure correctly gives the EVF the edge.

100% with my X-Pro1 because of the 14mm lens

approx. 70% with my X100.

I'd say I mostly just use the LCD screen, then the OVF some. The EVF hardly every. May have tried it, but it's not something I use.

Not sure why I "prefer" the LCD over the OVF as I prefer OVF like on a DSLR, but I guess I have become used to just use the LCD on smaller cameras. Besides, the hood blocks part of the view.

X100S: 90% OVF and 10% EVF

I fell in love with this OVF on the X100s... but I can understand an EVF is more practical when using a zoom lens or various primes on the Pro 1.

It's much as with waist-level finders on medium format gear. There's just something to be said for composing using two eyes looking at an image on a surface at a comfortable viewing distance.

I have the feeling that this approach, by not blocking one's entire view with the camera itself, lends some of the context back to the framed picture in the finder, restoring some of that larger contextual view so often cited by those of us who really like the OVF.

Best wishes,

Michael

Thanks - I'll give that a try. I would actually like to use the OVF more…maybe my New Year resolution will be to learn the OVF properly!

I tend to shoot a lot of shallow DOF travel portraits (i.e. no second chances if I mess up), so the EVF is just more reliable.

When starting to work with the OVF set the camera to give you a 3 second review after the shot. That way you immediately see your results and can spot check focus. If you need to get right back to shooting half press the shutter and you are back to the OVF.

Probably 85% OVF, 15%EVF.

However, this varies depending upon the lens I am using.

When using the 8mm I use the EVF. When using adapted lens I'll use the EVF unless I either have enough light (or flash) to zone focus and then I'll use the OVF. For my 500mm I use the EVF but have also predictive focused and then used the OVF due to lag.

I also sometimes have the camera set to preview the picture after playback so it will auto switch from OVF to EVF for playback and then back. Wonderful feature.

My preference is strongly for the OVF and that isn't just because the EVF in the XP1 isn't class leading. I had the OMD before the XP1 and prefer the OVF against that EVF as well.

95% OVF... I love seeing outside the frame especially on the street.

The EVF is only used for very close shooting and Macro in my scenario.

How often would you say, percentage wise, do you use either? Also, what did you think your ratio would be like when you first bought your camera?

100% optical. I detest electronic viewfinders, and unless they improve greatly I will never buy a camera that doesn't have some sort of OVF.
