55-250 STM vs. 70-300 non-L, 70-200F4

In the review of the original 55-250 IS at the-digital-picture.com had a comment that the original 55-250 IS and 70-300 non-L are fairly similar in terms of IQ, and both were a step below the 70-200/4 non-IS.  There is no similar comparison/comment when reviewing the 55-250 STM.

With the improved optics of the 55-250 STM, does this mean it is now a bit better than the old lens and the 70-300, and reaching toward the IQ of the L?  Or is it still in the same ballpark, but still that same step below the 70-200/4?

Lastly, how is contrast on the new lens?  (This is one aspect where I would like to see improvement vs. the old lens)

based on the MTF charts, the newest 55-250 resolves better at the wide end than either the 70-300 or the 70-200 f/4. at the long end the 55-250 resolves better than the 70-300 and is equal to (slightly better than) the L, give or take ...

i'm only basing this on the canon MTF charts ... my opinion does not account for lens copy variation ... nor does it take into consideration that the 55-250 is only intended for aps-c cameras ...

Good but keep in mind that there is more than resolution in a lens, CA, PF, contrast, distorsion, vignetting, buit quality ......

There is also lens design is getting better also and the 70-200mm/4L is an old design, but i like mine even if i only bought it in December

Re: 55-250 resolves better ...

Absolutely right ... it's not only about resolution. The 70-200 is an outstanding lens. I owned it once, and now I have the 55-250 MkI. The 55-250 is more versatile because of the size/weight and the IS, but IQ-wise it's far from the 70-200/4L ...
