Nikon 300mm f/4 ED IF Telephoto Lens plus Teleconverter with Nikon D300 camera?

What is the best Nikon 2 times Teleconverter to use with Nikon 300mm f/4 ED IF AF Telephoto Lens?

This the older lens from the 1980's to year 2000. It's the "tank!"

Thinking either using Nikon TC200/201 or Nikon TC 300/301?

Stats show 300/301 being better and recommended for lenses 200mm or more?

Open to suggestions

If I am not mistaken there is no Nikon TC which will support AF with this lens.  The Kenko TCs will - I have used the 1.4x so I don't know how good the 2x ones are, but they will AF.

If AF is not a concern for you, then I can't really comment on quality.

Cheers

This lens works very well with the Kenko 1.4TC and AF is good

A TC-300 or 301 is likely to be the better choice. The 2xx series have a very much shorter optical stack; their designs try to accomplish too much in too short of a space. You could expect the more compact TCs to have more chromatic aberration and possibly more curvature of field as well.

Oh, go ahead and ignore any responses that talk about autofocus with regard to your purely manual focus lens.

The TC-301 should be better, theoretically.  Keep in mind that these TCs are made for AI manual-focus lenses, lack an AF drive coupling, and do not connect the CPU contacts.

The camera will see your lens as manual-focus and non-CPU when using one of these TC models.

The OP did explicitly describe it as an AF lens - and such a model does exist with a 1987 introduction.

Hello Tony:

The T 301 is better quality. However, going to purchase the TC 201. Do you know the approximate percentage of loss of sharpness for each one when using with the Nikon 300 mm f/4 ED ID AF lens?

The lens I am using is the one manufactured from 1987 through 2000.

Thank you for replying.

Hello Marianne:

The lens in question is the 300 mm f/4 lens manufactured by Nikon from 1987 through 2000. The AF still should be functional for either the TC 201 and/or TC 301 teleconverters? Correct?

Going to use the TC-201 to save some money and try it out before moving onto the TC 301.

Please let me know your thoughts,

Thank you

Unfortunately, no.  Nikon never made TCs specifically for the "screw-drive" AF lenses.  They only have TCs for manual-focus non-CPU lenses (TC-201, etc.) or AF-I/AF-S lenses (TC-14E, TC-17E, TC-20E).

The only option for a TC to provide AF with your lens is third-party such as Kenko.  Lenses like yours require a shaft-drive coupling within the TC, which the Kenko has, but Nikon never incorporated this feature into any TC they made.

Marianne

Do you know which Kenko teleconverter which would work with this lens and provide auto focus?

Any 2 times Kenko teleconverters with Auto Focus?

Please let me know

Thank you

Kenko 1.4 is very good, while the 2.0 is not as good. I use the Kenko N-AF 1.4X Teleplus Pro 300 DGX and it will auto focus with my old Nikon 300/f4 AF

Hello John

You reference a 2.0. Is this a Kenko 2.0?

If so, which one? Is there lots or degredation between this and 1.4 Kenko?

Wanting to retain as much sharpness as possible. Reason I was asking
About the Nikon TC 201/301? But, no autofocus with old Nikon 300mm f/4

Thank you

I have the Kenko 1.4 Tc that I referenced and the Kenko N-AF 2X Teleplus MC7 DGX.

The 2.0 Kenko is not as sharp as the 1.4

Well-Looks like the most effective and viable option is the Kenko 1.4 Teleplus Pro 300. Most bang for the buck and squeeze about 420 mm out of the 300 mm f/4 along with retaining autofocus. $150.00-$200.00 price range. Picked up the 300 mm f/4 lens for $277.00 on Ebay.

Will save money to buy Nikon 600 mm lens later. Would like the Nikon 300 mm f 2.8 with 2 times TC but do not have the $6,000.00 to fork out.

Will be on the look out for older Nikon 600 mm f/4 but these are rare and about $2,500.00.

Thank you all for your help and input!!
