Rokinon 24mm Tilt Shift Lens: First Photos
7 months ago

This is a lens that I have wanted for a long time.  While I had the Arasat 35mm tilt shift at one time, the IQ was not to my expectations.  The Rokinon 24mm has a nice focal length and allows shifting or tilting in all directions.  A few days ago I visited the Rocky Mountains in Alberta to try it out.  The first pic is shot at f5.6 and appears quite sharp.  Both pictures are with the K3.  The focus peaking on the K3 allows you to select the degree of tilt for max sharpness across the frame.

Very interesting. Would you please post more details, e.g. approx. degree of tilt and/or shift what was used for example for the shot #1? Was it shot hand held or from a tripod? Other technical specifics?

The 1st shot had 2 deg of tilt and all photos are from a tripod.

Is it designed for full frame, or APS-C?

Thanks,

Joe

Without vertical lines how do you decide what tilt and shift to apply or is it about getting sharp foreground? Great first photo scene.

Nice first shots too. One thing I've wanted was a TS lens for interiors as well as exteriors. I know there is an M42 option out there (have the link forget the name) but this Samyang/Rokinon looks interesting. Might end up on my 2014 wish list, especially as I might be getting a lot more of that sort of work.

I had planned on picking up a used 1D3 or even a used 5Dmk II or mk III and the Canon TS 17mm...but this is a new option.

This was an interesting review from the perspective (pun intended) of real world use:
http://fstoppers.com/fstoppers-reviews-the-rokinon-24mm-f3-5-tilt-shift-lens

It sure had potential I do wish this was a 17mm though.  But, hey it's a great start.  Keep the example shots coming!!  Inquiring minds want to know.

Hi Joe:

It is designed for a FF; actually larger than FF as you need lots of sensor coverage for shifting.

Hi Ian:

For tilt there are Tables on the web that provide an approximate value; in practice, you tilt until you see the max focus using Live View.

Yes 17mm for APS-C would be ideal but if Pentax ever come out with a FF, 24mm would be great.

# 1 is superb, and beautiful PP.

It's a kind of lens that is missing to my kit, might be tempted by it eventually.

Do you think you could share a good sharp picture via flickr or another picture hoster in full resolution? Any subject which allows assessing the sharpness in the edges and corner will do.

The one reserve about this lens is that of not so good sharpness edge to edge.

Only there are little full res samples.

I don't belong to Flicker but at full size this lens appears to be quite sharp.  Tilt shift lenses tend to be sharper in the corners since they are made for a large image circle.

Dale - #1 is superb.  Since I do a lot of landscapes and I was thinking about the FA24mm f2.0.  I am going to look into this lens since I have wanted a tilt shift lens and the length would be ideal.

Seems like this lens would work very well on my K-01 with focus peaking.

Thanks for posting and hope you post more images very soon.

Hi Dale,

Thanks for posting.  I love the first one - a classic near-far landscape.  I used to shoot LF and later made my own TS adapted lenses for my Pentax 645 (film, not the D) when I was using that.  I really miss movements........they just add sooooo much.

Cheers, Rod

Nice to see what you can do with it; the first one really shows you the focus possibility.

This is a very interesting lens, though dangerous for budgetary considerations.

Let's see more

Keep at it!
