Epson 3800 Banding
Dec 27, 2013

This is a topic which has arisen before, and I have followed all suggestions to no avail. My 3800 is now exactly 5 years old and has performed brilliantly over this time, but has developed an annoying banding, as shown in this scan of my son, with the original TIFF on the left:

Digital file on L, scanned photo on R. Original 20cm high.

I am running the latest iMac with OS X Mavericks, and have installed the latest Epson driver.

Photoshop CS6, with Epson's own profile for Matt Archival, Pro 38 ARMP.

Numerous head alignments both via utility and printer panel

Numerous nozzle checks and cleanings

Power cleaning x2

Any suggestions gratefully received. I know there's bait of colour calibration to be done.

And the head aligned and the nozzle checks were clean?

Are you printing at highest possible printer resolution?

Good question, and also whether bi- or uni-directional.

Just did another nozzle check: defect in light magenta, slightly so in light cyan.

Head clean no improvement, power clean no improvement.

Are we talking print head ?

I've always printed at 360dpi, no problems.

I had to look the direction thing up. If you mean LS_High Speed, it is not checked.

That would be enough to cause a slight banding.

Head clean no improvement, power clean no improvement.

Repeated head cleaning isn't a good thing, especially repeated power cleanings.

Are you using OEM or third party inks?

You are confused!! We do not mean image resolution ( Pixels per inch ) We mean PRINTER resolution as in quality. In your PRO3880 printer driver you will find that. Pick Quality 5

You also need to clear out those blocked nozzles. Or NOTHING will help!

You might need the folded paper towel wetted with Windex with Ammonia under the head trick.

Stop doing clean cleans as these will only cause to waste more ink. Try only running several nozzle checks every 20-25 minutes and take a look to see if the SAME EXACT patter or missing nozzles occurs. Also turn off the printer tonight over night and then Power it back on in the morning and after it pressurizes do another nozzle check and compare with the previous sets.

My last resort is always to fold a paper towel soaked with windex and park it on the capping station. Google it, there's plenty of instructions, works sometimes.

Joe, does the 3800 have an auto nozzle check like the 3880? It prints out much more from each nozzle (small blocks instead of tiny lines), the printer then scans the print (working on four colors at a time), then does what looks like a pairs cleaning on any channel with blocked nozzles, and then reprints the four colors again.

I know there is no way to manually initiate a pairs cleaning with either the 3800 or 3880, and it may be that it does all channels, but the auto print itself is probably equivalent of eight or so manual noxxle check prints. So you are getting about eight nozzle checks before a cleaning - much better than back to back cleanings.

yes, the 3800 has auto nozzle check.  When I have let mine (3800) sit for a while, invariably, the first auto nozzle check is a disaster (and in fact throws a printer error) and a 2nd one gets everything going.

Thanks Joe

I will search out some Windex. How wet should the paper towel be?

There is a consistent pattern in the nozzle check in LM.

I can't find anything in Printer Utility or Photoshop dialog box about printer resolution and quality numbers

Just make it not drippy. The idea is to have the nozzle place come into contact with the wet enough folded paper towel so the head nozzle plate is totally wet and in good contact with it.

Thank you. I followed advice in this thread and Googled away, finding a couple of useful sites.

So off to supermarket: no Windex. Same at auto parts. Eventually found the stuff is called Mr Muscle in New Zealand for some reason.

Mr Muscle window cleaner in the UK does not contain ammonia which is important for the unblocking process. I eventually found a company in the UK that could sell me US made Windex but I had to buy 5 bottles. Whatever you do, don't use Mr Muscle kitchen or bathroom cleaners, they are far too aggressive.

Windex is available in New Zealand under a different brand name: Mr Muscle. There are several sorts and I got the Glass Cleaner with Ammonia-D, which I see is an ingredient in Original Windex.

Got the head soaking in it for several hours and did a clean and nozzle check, No change, blast it. So it is having a second soak now. I presume then one or two cleaning cycles?

Anybody got to this stage with no success?

OK, two Windex soakings each several hours long, the second followed by (yet another) power clean.

Nozzle check still shows original defects.

Misery.

Frankly I think a couple of hours is not long enough. Most people go for overnight and if I was feeling as down as you are I'd go for at least 24 hours. Considering the amount of use the printer has had it may be time to consider cleaning of the capping station and particularly the wiper blade. If the wiper blade is the same as on the 4800 it is two blades next to each other and the space between can get filled with thick and drying ink which may make it stiff and ineffectual. There are instructional videos for this on youtube and probably one by jtoolman which you will find in his signature.
