Could be? I certainly can't verify it

Am not looking forward to my D4 becoming superseded, though it's inevitable.

If you can work without the D4 for a while and you want to upgrade, now is the time to sell. I sold my D3 right after the D3s was released. I received about $2,800 for it, which was less than I had expected. But I knew that if I waited longer I would get only $2,000.

Hard to believe an upgrade would be released so soon. I can see a D3x replacement but not a D4.

If so, I'd expect the successor of the D4, hence the D4s. The Sochi Olympics is slated to begin in February, so it should be a good time to launch a new flagship at the CES or somewhere else in January.

It's D4s. I only hope it's not going to be too tempting. If it's DF sensor with same body, I will keep shooting with D4. I don't care too much about sensor upgrade. If the AF is significantly better, I will lose some money :(. But may be better than switching to 1DX

Years ago there was a frenzy on DPReview's forums that a particular Nikon update was just around the corner. As a few people pointed out, this was nothing but people in an echo chamber uttering wishes. Well, someone sold his main body before the resale price dropped.

…And nothing happened. He posted to say that he was still waiting and when was the upgrade coming.

It'll be here when it's here. I hope it's a 24 MPer and thus give a certain older camera a chance to retire and free production capacity.

I always said the price the 16mp was a HUGE MISTAKE on Nikons part. I think they needed to get something out the door to keep their brand alive. Now the real D4 will be released.

If its a D4s - which seems about right in terms of timing - 2 years after the D4 release - I wouldn't hold your breath looking for a MP increase.

S models historically offered only minor upgrades.

Maybe the new DF processing /pipeline for the new D4s using the same sensor as the D4 for some minor improvements in high ISO.

This has happened with at least a couple products, such as the 70-200 mm. Every year someone started an update rumor discussion. Then one year the lens was finally replaced with the current model.
