"Dirty" prints from an Epson 1400

I have an Epson Stylus Photo 1400 A3+ printer. It's a few years old, but has always served me well.

Increasingly, I have noticed that the lighter colours are contaminated with dark ink at the start of a printing session, but return to normal after one or two pages. This isn't a big deal on plain paper charts, etc, but it's a waste of good quality paper and ink on high quality photo prints.

A workaround is to print a couple of sheets on plain paper before loading the nice paper. But this seems a bit of an unnecessary annoyance.

The sponge under the parking position seems to be quite wet. I don't know if this is related to the problem (I can't compare this with before the problem started). I can usually soak up quite a bit of ink using toilet tissue. There are no maintenance errors on the printer, and I've just replaced all the inks (always genuine Epson), so I don't think it's faulty cartridges.

Any suggestions, please?

Are you referring to the rectangular pad that the head parks on when you power off the printer?

This is not a true sponge but a porous grid with a rubber gasket on upper edge onto which the head seals on when you park the head.

It is supposed to be normally fairly dry during printing.

When you or the printer runs a cleaning cycle or ink purge during the installing of an ink cart, the head parks on to the pad. The purge pump produces a vacuum which sucks ink out of all the color nozzles and the ink is deposited directly onto the purge pad. Then the head un-parks itself and slides to the left to clear the purge pad and the Purge pump sucks the purge pad dry! The waste ink travels via one or two tubes to the waste ink pads deep inside the base of the printer.

If you are constantly seeing wetness on the purge pad then the printer is NOT draining ink out of it.

That is why you are getting those smudges.

Without being there to see the printer, all I can suggest is that you apply some Windex solution ( Window Cleaner with ammonia ) to the pad and let it soak for a while. If there is a slight clog inside the purging system the solution may be able to clear it out.

Agree with Joe (although I use a 5% Ammonia solution - Windex is not a known brand in my part of Spain and the active ingredient is Ammonia that you really need) BUT also, would query whether you have fitted a waste ink tube/bottle as if that is fitted, the ink in that pad area gets drained away, so any in that pad from a cleaning cycle will tend to stay and build up instead of being drained, which could be your real source of the problem.

I have checked my pad and found after a clean, the pad has a sort-of foamy top - which over a few minutes disappears. Using a kitchen roll paper pad can soak that away (which you seem to have tried) but as said, you need to fit a waste ink bottle - it's very easy to do. Remove right hand side as you view from front as described in video - you can then see size of tubing required - any bottle will do but preferably use a glass one for weight - plastic ones can move about and possibly spill. Location for bottle is same level as that on which printer is based. This video shows exactly what to do. Tubing and bottle are very cheep cheep - tubing will cost very little and am sure you can find a used bottle.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcIOmKBmCsQ

BTW - get printhead into Change Cartridge position then remove power supply - meaning NOT switch off or head will re-park. You can then move head freely and after checking RH parking pad mentioned - check on extreme left side too and use a paper pad to soak up any there. When finally finished, just replace power cord (or re-plug into mains socket - of course!) and printer will set up per normal.

Sorry for not getting back sooner. I've watched the video and decided to get my hands dirty.

The head wiper was pretty dirty. The sponge was again thick with ink. I tried soaking up the ink but became impatient and removed the whole block for external cleaning (I've done this once before). I gave it a good wash, and checked the two connecting tubes for blockages, and they seemed inky but clear. I also removed the side panel to look at the main tube, which seemed very clean.

Then it all went wrong. As I was refitting the sponge block, I lost grip on the right side tension spring and it disappeared (I know I know). I tried tipping the printer and shaking etc. But I couldn't hear the spring, so it seems to have become wedged somewhere. Oh dear.

Anyway, I rebuilt the printer and am using it now. It hasn't burst into flames yet, and the print quality seems okay for now.

I didn't clean the underside of the carriage, nor the cartridge taps. I wondered if one of the cartridges was leaking, but as they're all new in the last week I thought I'd wait and see if things improved.

Cheers for that.

I don't have a drain bottle. The only mod I ever did was fit a continuous ink system a few years ago, which I ditched after 12-18 months due to poor colour reproduction. So it's back as it was.

What makes me slightly uneasy is that the larger tube on the right side of the unit looks very clean compared with the smaller tubes coming out of the top sponge unit. I thought maybe there was a blockage somewhere in between, but it's impossible to see without taking everything to pieces. Maybe I will, now that I've lost a spring (see other post).

The 1400 is printing okay again after a good partial clean, following a video tutorial. I'll see how it goes. If things deteriorate further I may just wait until the ink runs out, bin the lot, and treat myself to the latest model.

Sounds like you're pretty knowledgeable of possible clog points and where ink builds up. You could download WicReset/iWicReset and see what it reports for waste ink saturation percentage.

In our next lifetimes, on all printers, Epson will have the ink drain to a user cleanable salvage tank. Then, we can find out what goes next. Amazes how long the plastic gears and carriage bands seem to last.

These are things that need to be performed every couple of months!

Oh Dear is right. If you are able to, you really need to find that spring.

Anyway, I rebuilt the printer and am using it now. It hasn't burst into flames yet, and the print quality seems okay for now.

Hope it lasts.

What does that spring do? It seems pretty stable without it, but obviously I can't see what's happening when the heads come over the top.

When I say "taps", I mean the nozzles in the bottom of the cartridge unit which pierce the bottom of the cartridges. I didn't want to take out the cartridges so soon after replacing them all, in case they didn't fit tightly enough when I replaced them.

OK you mean the ink stems. The are tapered so you don't have to worry about them not sealing.
