Hi

The ones I know of that have silent modes are the GM1 and I think GX7 with electronic shutters.

G5, G6 and GH3 also have electronic shutter. Work great in some situations, and not in some.

I use it the majority of the time with my GX7.

Taking shots of people on the subway, shooting the crowd in a "no photo" exhibit at a museum, shooting at a choral music concert, in stores, around town, shooting the listeners at a sound art installation… so, yeah, I use Silent mode all the time.

As the Olympus M4/3 all sound like a train crash, when I need silent I use my Panasonic LX3.

I like it!

I point the camera at some people and they say

"when are you going to take the picture?"

I say

"I just took 5 :-)!"

The first time I used electronic shutter, I had to check to see if the photo was taken or not. With manual (pre-) focus and wide-open lens, I cannot feel any movement or hear any sound.

For the kind of photography as you describe, if I want to be unnoticed, I use the Sony RX100. Amazing little camera. 20MP 1" sensor, Zeiss zoom lens that opens up to f/1.8, very good IQ and low light performence for it's size, totally silent shutter and gets into your shirt pocket.

It's worth adding here that the new Panasonic GM1 is also extremely quiet with its mechanical shutter (if anyone tried one and thinks it isn't, turn off the shutter sound effect, which is on by default). Like the other current models, it's totally silent with the electronic shutter on instead and new to the GM1 is the ability to automatically switch between them when required, plus electronic front curtain operation of the mechanical shutter. There are tradeoffs of course - top flash sync of 1/50, top mechanical shutter speed of 1/500, but the top electronic speed is 1/16000, flash use is easy if the shutter's on the auto switching setting (within the limits above) and the electronic shutter does scan faster than the GX7's, even though it's supposed to be the same sensor (I guess it can't be, quite).

Unless your in a pretty quite room, the EM5`s shutter is pretty quite, I would be more interested in Olympus developing a few lenses with in built leaf shutters than digital shutters, there much better for flash and there quite.

Daguerreotype cameras...
In reply to Zoran K, Dec 14, 2013

have a totally silent shutter--unless you happen drop the lens cap when taking it off to expose the "sensor".

BTW, if you find one (a Daguerreotype camera), let me know and I'll buy it from you.

Sony's RX1 (+r) is totally silent. I love it. Totally discreet.

To other GX7 owners, are you supposed to be able to lower or turn off the shutter sound independently of the "beep"? On my camera the shutter sound remains the same volume although I've gone into the menu to select the option to mute or lower it.
