D7100 - Is it worth to replace Sigma 18-200mm OS with a Nikon 18-140mm
Dec 13, 2013

Hi there,

Having read reviews of the new Nikon 18-140mm, I have been pondering as to whether it is worth replacing it for my Sigma 18-200mm DC OS. The reason I ask is that the Sigma doesn't appear to be very sharp on the D7100; so was wondering would the Nikon be much sharper?

I mainly use this as all purpose walk around lens - family holidays/days out, and do some portraits also and have a home studio set up with soft boxes etc. - again for portraits etc.

I know I will lose the extra 60mm zoom range that I currently have with Sigma, but if the IQ is comparatively very good then I am okay with this. The only other lens I considered was the Nikon 16-85, but read across many sites/reviews that this one is not very good for portraits. Therefore, leaving it out.

Any suggestions would be most welcomed.

Thanks.

IMO, anytime you are getting a super zoom starting at 18, doesn't matter if it's 18-105, 18-140, 18-200, etc... you are going to get comparatively similar, mediocre performance.  Therefore I would typically advise people against "upgrading" from one 18-xxx to another 18-xxx.  Now if your sigma is total crap and you pretty much only shoot the one lens, then you might be a case to really nit-pick the fairly subtle differences.

18-140 is a great lens.  You just have to read the reviews.  gets a great DXO score too for the D7100.

I bought one and love it. You can get them really cheap as well.

Nikon lens is always sharper... now that's hogwash!! comments like that just show pure idiocy. The reviews of the 18 140 show it to be a very decent lens and is a great companion to the D7100 according to reviews (check SLRGear.com to see its sharpness across its full focal length, pretty decent actually. and way better than the sigma in this instance, I think it would be a worthy replacement, but in general the replacing a 18 to xX with another 18 to xX is sound advice, but there are always exceptions and this instance could be one.

I'm no expert but I agree with Jostian regarding Nikon lenses always being sharper.  It all very much depends on the body.

I too thought the 18-140 sounded like a sharp lens, until I looked at the ISO 12233 charts. I'm amazed how much sharper the 16-85 is and even more amazed how sharp the cheap ol' 18-105 is. I think out of all three the 18-105 actually does the best.

Maybe so.  I have a Sigma 18-200 OS for my Pentax K5ii and it is the only lens I own that I am actually disappointed with and I never use  (other lenses I have I am quite happy with on my K5ii).   The 18-140 on my D7100 I find nice and sharp.

Thank you all for your help. Looks like Nikon 18-140 may well be a worthy replacement.
