*** Mini Challenge #409 - The Best of 2013 ***

The subject of this challenge is "The Best of 2013."

It's soon the end of the year. I'd like to close out the year by

seeing your  favorite shot or best photograph  of the year.

The challenge begins now, and will end at 9:00 pm New York time, on Thursday Dec 19, 2013.

THE RULES

The host gives you a topic of interest and you get going.

You may enter up to three competition images.

The host chooses the winner after the challenge closes (usually after one week).
The decision of the judge (the host) is final. The judge is not eligible. The winner then chooses the next topic, runs the challenge, judges the winner, and passes on the baton to that person.

If you submit a photo, please check in when the winners are posted. The first place winner is expected to host the next challenge. If the first place person cannot host, it moves to the 2nd place, or if the second can not host, as in this case, the baton goes to the third, etc.

Any picture you've taken is eligible regardless of time taken and camera.

Please reply to the FIRST (ORIGINAL) post if you are submitting an entry and please remember to change the Subject of your post to display your name or picture titles. This way, when someone comments (i.e. replies), it will refer specifically to you. If all entries read "Re: Mini Challenge #409"... it would be very boring to scan the list.

Try to put your entries within a 'single' post.

Please give a title to each photo - this makes it easier to differentiate when giving comments.

Feel free to comment on other contestants' images.
(The asterisk rule to invite comments is deliberately dropped.)

You can contribute photos for fun, that is, mark it as "fo fun" and it will not be considered as entry. An entry already seen is welcome.

Main rule and general guideline: Have fun!!

I can't but smile -- as the judge and jury you are a glutton for punishment. This group continues to share outstanding photos every week. Asking for their best is only asking for trouble.

This challenge will prove a difficult one to judge; and better you than me.

Now, I'll have to looking to find 3 for you.

Happy Holidays.

I like this shot the best of your three. It is a super motion blur. I love the blurred colors on the left and the tunnel effect that you achieved with the train - excellent.

Heading back home

My favorites are the 1st and the 3rd. Heading Home is a classic composition made better by the sunlight streaming through the trees. But my eye keeps coming back to the 1st one. The overall composition with the dark sharp features of the tree complimented by the patches of colors makes it my favorite.

I also like your first and last images very much. I'm a sucker for woods with light-rays.

Three fine shots, but I'm a softy for good bird shots - and I really like this one.

Where and when did you capture this?

Thanks, Jim. I live on a property at Cape Lazo, near Comox on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, overlooking Texada Island, to my east, across the Strait of Georgia. This barred owl was perched all afternoon on a pine that sits just over the bank leading down to the ocean, although it was still slightly above the surface of the lawn, making it an easy target. This would have been on October 24 of this year. The owl was perhaps 10 meters from the lens, and sat quite unperturbed by my presence, seemingly disdainfullly. The camera was hand-held, and the file processed slightly in Sagelight Image Editor.

Incidentally, the last image above was taken in different light, same camera, a Fuji HS20 EXR, and shows the northern reaches of Texada Island and the Coast Range to its east.  The dawns here are amazing and so varied, I am compelled to get up to great them each day.

Excellent series Crandell! Your owl is pretty special. You and the Fuji did well.

Three fine shots. I appreciate the geometry you saw and captured in the last one; but your first is my favorite. The red leaf just jumps out of the photo.

Thanks very much, Jim.  Took many weeks of wrestling with the Fuji to learn part of its charms and to get some decent images.  It's not an easy challenge for a dilettante like me.

Good set to start the mini.

I like the third one with the effects. (now is that dangerous to stick your head out the train window?)
