No new 7dMk2 in the near future

Hi,

Canon has just released a new firmware for the 7d, v2.0.5 dealing with an FTP bug in file transfers.

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras/eos_7d#DriversAndSoftware

Canon would not make a new firmware (it's very expensive coding, testing, releasing...) if the new 7dMk2 was coming in the spring...

Thanks

It's a bug fix, not a feature enhancement, and tells us nothing about a possible 7DII.

I hope Canon hasn't got something in the firmware to stop us using third party batteries and Sigma lens

I loaded the new firmware, a very easy procedure. It erases the time data.

Yes it does. To release a new firmware would cost Canon between .5 to a full million dollars.

  1. Define the requirements
  2. Assign a team
  3. Make the fixes
  4. Do some preliminary testing like does it work or not, does the bug fix breaks something else
  5. Translation in other languages
  6. Beta testing to a few dozen people, wait for their results
  7. Remove all the debugging code
  8. Some more testing to check that removing the debugging code doesn't break anything
  9. One last set of testing
  10. Releasing the firmware
  11. PR/media releases
  12. Update all the websites where people can download

You do not want to incur these type of costs for such a marginal bug that affects very few people: FTP/USB with the Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E5A, since the last update was Sep-2012

I think it's interesting that people think they know what a multi BILLION dollar multi national company is going to do based off a firmware release. I'm sure the financial analysts as well as the competition are freaking out right now because this ftp bug fix is going to railroad EVERYTHING!!!!

What's your source for that number? I know what a hotfix costs my employer (a large enterprise software company), and it's significantly different from that.

Based on past patterns, we have to wait at least two days.
In reply to elfroggio, 7 months ago

You don't have any information that supports your numbers or your conclusion.  A revision is the most minor fix that anyone makes to firmware and they make changes right up until the moment a camera is about to be replaced.  The last firmware for the 5D Mark II was released on 2/28/2012.  The 5D Mark III was announced two days later.  TWO DAYS!  So if we're going to make wild, baseless extrapolations from almost zero information then I think what we've learned here is that we have to wait at least two whole days before Canon will think about announcing the 7DII.

I was thinking the same thing, but howardroark's post re:the 5dII makes sense, too.  Besides, there are probably tons of 7D's that will need the firmware fix whose owners will not upgrade to the MkII.

I'm not giving up hope...yet!  But, while I'm waiting, I continue to watch used 1DIV prices, just in case

Yes, I also watch used 1DIV prices, but they are not going down much, if at all.

You define it as a "marginal bug" and then claim it costs a million dollars to fix?  The Canon SW dev team doesn't have offices on 5th avenue in NY.  My support team releases 10-15 defect fixes every month, in addition to all support responsibilities, for $60k/month. And I guarantee to software is more complex than a camera's firmware.

I think this says nothing about a future camera release.

If it added significant new features as the last firmware did, I'd agree.  I don't think bug fix firmware rules out a succrssor.  It doesn't really mean anything one way or the other.

Exactly that. 'The latest rumour'..... any fool can start a rumour .....the biggest fool is the one who actually believes it.

Until it's announced by Canon the CR1, CR2 canon rumors means diddly squat.

I am sure it's coming but I reckon Canon will want to have had the 70D out in the wilderness for, at least, another six months to push the sales along before they unload the 7D2 ......if it ever happens.

I am in no hurry.
