A58 + Tamron 17-50 = 6fps in 1st second, 3fps onwards

This thread made me test my A58 fps with different settings and lenses.

Gears used:

  1. Sony SLT-A58
  2. Tamron 17-50 F2.8
  3. 18-55 SAM-2 kit lens
  4. SanDisk Extreme pro 95mbps read/90mbps write speed

With both lenses, the Lens Distortion and other settings did not effected the performance at all, but the interesting point here is with Tamron 17-50 I got 6fps in 1st second and 3fps onwards. Kit lens limited to 5fps only and behaved in the well known A58's performance reputation.

Tamron 17-50 results, 12 shots in 3200ms

With the Tamron lens, you shouldn't notice a difference with lens correction settings.  Lens correction settings only apply to Sony lenses.  On top of that, they will only apply to Sony lenses that the camera has stored profiles for, which your 18-55 II is listed (list can be found in the A58 brochure).

Other questions to your testing method:

Did you shoot JPEG only?  If so, what quality and size setting?

Were any other effect modes turned on? DRO? Creative Style?

Have you tested in RAW only or RAW+JPEG to see if the lens correction timings are the same?

What mode were you shooting in?

Were you manually focusing or auto focusing?

To reduce the chance of other factor affecting your frame rate, I would suggest the following:

Set your camera to manual focus and a fixed ISO. Shoot in M mode or A mode.  Set metering to spot metering (doesn't really matter to M mode), set aperture to your largest to keep shutter speed up, and set your ISO so that shutter speed is higher than 1/250s.

This should at least eliminate the possibility that another factor is keeping the Tamron from shooting properly.  The issue with the Tamron sounds like another factor is causing the slow framerate, whether it is focusing, metering changes, or change in aperture/shutter speed.  This should at least confirm if you are having a problem with your lens.

Also make sure lens correction is turned off just to make sure it isn't causing a problem with this lens since it is incompatible with being treated with any corrections anyways.

I haven't ever run into a lens on my camera that shot slower when all other factors allow for a fast frame rate.  I have run into a slow or sticky aperture, but that only caused exposure issues and not frame rate issues.

JPEG Fine, 20mp.

Were any other effect modes turned on? DRO? Creative Style?

other effects/modes was set to default/OFF

Have you tested in RAW only or RAW+JPEG to see if the lens correction timings are the same?

RAW lasted for 8 shots, 6shots in 1st second, 2 shots in next 2 seconds

What mode were you shooting in?

Manual and other settings as suggested by you

Were you manually focusing or auto focusing?

Manual Now... F2.8, ISO-1600

RAW is dead after 8 shots

Fine 20mp JPEG, 12 shots in less than 2900ms

Well, there you go. Following Paul you managed to save 300ms for an extra shot.

Happy Shooting
