Is this noise normal for 5D III at ISO 2500?

I have taken delivery of my 5D III and one of the reasons I bought the camera was improved low light performance over my 7D.  Am I being unreasonable to expect less noise in this image, shot at 1/160, f4.5 and ISO 2500?

2500 should be pretty clean.  It's hard for me to see the noise in your image because it has been downsized before uploading.  Try uploading the original image so we can view it at 100%.

This was at ISO 4000, and it's fairly clean.  I did some color noise reduction but luminance noise was untouched.  A lot of detail is still visible.  Is this the level of noise you see in your image?  If so, I'd say that's normal.  The 5D Mark III is no 6D or 1DX (not to mention D4/Df), but it's certainly better than the 7D.

Looking at the image supplied, the noise looks to be reasonable for ISO 2500. For forum members to make a better appraisal you will need to post a crop of an area you think looks too noisy at 100% of native file resolution, Regards, Mark

The noise looks fine (in this severely downsized image). I'd be more concerned about not having obtained a sharp pic, perhaps a faster shutter speed or smaller aperture or stablizing the camera better or you are using one shot with a moving target approaching the camera, etc.

IMO it's not only important to compare noise at 100% zoom but to look at solid color areas and to assure in-camera and RAW conversion noise reduction is turned off. Here's such a sample of 6D noise at ISO 3200.

I don't see much noise in this photo but a bit soft as Rick said.  ISO 2500 is not much for 5D3.  With appropriate NR, you should get pretty clean photo.

This one was taken at ISO 5000 in wildlife.

I have a 7d which I have had since Oct of 2010.  I've done a lot of shooting at 1600 ISO and a little at 3200 ISO.  Like yourself I was wanting better high ISO performance.  Just one week ago I purchased a 5DIII.  I'm finding that the 5d III at 3200 is still much cleaner than the 7d at 1600.  You may need to adjust some settings.

I don't see a noise problem I see a focus problem.

No that is not noise it is bad focus. Perhaps soft are missed focus but not noise. I shot in 3600 for the first time thinking these are going to be awful but when I got home to look at them the were not bad at all. The 5D3 is capable of much higher iso settings before it will become noisy.

For sure that is possible, I even have noise att ISO 800 with the 1DX if i put noise reduction off in the camera.
