Hypothetical Question

Hypothetical Question:

Would you agree to surrender all your current cameras and gear for 15 million tax-free dollars and a Nikon D300s, with the stipulation that you could never buy or use any other camera again, for the rest of your life, whatsoever?

Would you do it for any other camera?

Just wonderin'!

My wife and kids would
In reply to davids8560, 9 months ago

I think my wife and kids would. They are not much into photography, so they would probably throw away that funny Nikon camera and keep the money.

That gives our household a total of 45 million. So nobody would protest when I go and buy the cameras that I want.

Sure.

Would you do it for any other camera?

Sure.

Fat chance of any camera lasting me for my next ~40 years of life expectancy, but I neither make a single cent from photography nor am I planning to and an extra US$15 millions in the bank would give me a *lot* of very valuable financial security. And, I can always go back to drawing.

Just wonderin'!

Hmmm, would that include smartphones too?

But, yes, I would.  Guess I could even give up the smartphone for that kind of money.

Would you do it for any other camera?

You bet.

Just wonderin'!

Just curious, why?

Every two years a model appears that suits my needs better. So there is no point in committing myself to a particular model, specifically not a DSLR (Too big, too noisy, wasting time having to change lenses).

Would you do it for any other camera?

No need to. I got what suits me now (and for the next two years) four weeks ago.

You'll never really know David, unless you put up the 15 mill, and the D300s.

For $15,000,000 I'd settle for a Box Brownie. As they say: it's the photographer, not the camera.

A deal with bad intentions is a bad deal...
In reply to davids8560, 9 months ago

A person who would set up a deal like that with me would be somebody who would not have good intentions towards me.

I would like to avoid deals like that.

Of course I would.    But since I´m sure a D300 wouldn´t last me the rest of my natural life I´d probably swap it for something that would, like a Leica M7 and spend some of the money buying a vast quantity of 35mm film and a freezer to store it in in case it goes out of production.   Maybe get a dozen high quality scanners too.   And if it didn´t last me, I guess tough ****.  Time to take up the guitar or painting instead.

I´m not particularly materialistic but of the two forms of materialism posed in the question - money versus gear fetishism I´d at least opt for the one that would make my life less stressful.

If I could keep my current gear that I am familiar with, I'd accept a meager 1.5 million and would never buy anything camera related ever again.

Shall we close the deal? You want my PayPal?

Re: Hypothetical Question: years left
In reply to davids8560, 9 months ago

How much years to live are probably left? I am not so young, so I take the 1.5 M. But I would rather have the Canon 6D (just bought it :).
