Have been thinking of buying a 14mm lens. You convinced me, I will order one next week. Thanks for posting.

Nice testimonial to the 14 and associated images.  I received my 14 last week and haven't had a chance to get out and shoot with it.

You peaked my interest with your method of 'shooting square' with it and the loss of 'stuff' on the edges, which typically one of the reasons to get a wider view ..... to include the wider fov.  Also, it got me thinking about the challenges of thinking more about composition when shooting square.

Well done,

Bill

It certainly is a marvel. I do not use mine too much but it, along with the 18-55 is my dynamic duo combo. The 35mm prime is on my list but I do love the versatility of the zoom.

Nice write up and great photos. You certainly understand your Urban Theme and show it well.

I appreciate your 2 prime thing. I have recently gone prime only at the the mid to low end and just sold off my 18-55.

Did get the 23mm as part of that deal.

Since you are a 2 prime guy, you will not miss the 23. I suggest you never try it as you may well become a 3 prime guy. Its right up there with my 14mm.

Keep on Shooting,

Brian

Very nice photography. Goes to show when you put exceptional quality equipment in talented hands the results can be pretty amazing.

The Fujifilm 14mm seems to be a truly superb lens but this makes me wonder how good the 10-24 is likely to be. I'm resisting buying the 14mm for now preferring to wait for the release of the 10-24 but your article makes this more difficult now.

This is truly a daunting issue. I am glad I gave up waiting and got the 14mm for all the reasons you have read. However, when I look at most of my shots, including a set I just posted (Central Park...) and just now checked the FL I use, I see a serious pattern. Most of my shots are in the 14-24mm range, often 14, 18, 21 and 24. I do hate stopping and changing lenses and it seems that the mythical 10-24 would certainly address that - and likely very well. There is a reason why it is big, and the wait is never ending. Perhaps it will another marvel. F/4 with OS.

Again, for myself I can glad I gave in and picked it up in the summer. But if it was today, with the mythical 10-24 on the horizon (next year), without a solid rumor for an announcement timeframe, it would be aggravating!!! Might be worth the wait, but the 14mm never disappoints (and takes the same filter and hood with the 18-55).

Thanks, nice review. Would you mind explaining more about shooting square or 1x1? And why would you not consider the 23 ? Thx.

You have some gorgeous photos on your flickr page. I just took the 14mm to Istanbul and really loved its performance but for still getting used to shooting that wide.

Thanks all for taking the time to read the blog and your lovely comments... very much appreciated!

In a hope to answer your questions Afragisk, I'll start with the last one:

I basically love the 14mm FOV so much that I don't really need/use any other focal length, so despite the glowing reviews of the 23mm, I think it would sit on the shelf next to my 60mm and 18-55mm. I'm pretty sure I've found my lobster...

If the wide angle zoom turns out to be optically as good as the other XF lenses, I may be in trouble however

As for using square format, I always set my EVF to square and compose using that... not cropping in post. Here's an example of an image that benefits from being 1x1:

If I used the native 3x2 then the image would have included: to the left, a bit of a computer desk and to the right, a bit of foliage... All of which would have distracted from the final image. Using 1x1 therefore distills the impact of the subject matter I'm photographing.

Hope that makes sense!?

Both lenses are living legends. Decisions should be made, not against which lenses might be slightly better, but which focal length is better for your needs. I use 14, 18, 21 and 24 a lot. One prime makes for a specialist for that FL, but I am not a specialist, although I love the dramatic potential of wide angle work.

I ordered one today from B&H Re: The XF14mm... My real world testimonial
In reply to Felts, 9 months ago

Have been waiting for the 10-24 but as of now it is vaporware. Took a look at my old photos from my D70 (now sold) and found that I rarely used the 10.5mm lens that I once had. That made me think that I most likely would not use the wide end of the 10-24 very often. Also when I shot film I used my Nikon 20mm a lot.

In reading the reviews of the 14mm almost all of them rave about the lens so recently I have been giving serious consideration to getting it. Figuring that the 10-24 would be cost a lot more and might not be as well corrected as the 14 I ordered one today from B&H. Really looking forward to getting this!

BTW, I also frequently shoot in 1:1 with my X-E1. It makes you think differently about compostion. Wish that my X100 ahd that option.

This was composed in 1:1 with the X-E1.

First off I am a big fan of the 1:1

I wish some manufacturer would make a square sensor.  The M43 mount could benefit a lot with a square sensor.

It would be interesting to see the results of the same shot from the Ricoh GR and wide angle converter 1:1

Thinking about degrees vertical with the 14 mm you might get close to your shots with the 12mm on the 4/3 format but I have not done the math yet.  Anyone got the degrees vertical on the Oly 12 and Fuji 14?
