Interesting shot. Why did you decide to crop it that way?

Nice!

Is it a special ant or what? A fighter ant? An ant queen?

Thanks! It is a ground beetle (Carabidae, Trechinae) belonging to the genus Anophthalmus.

Practicing with the FZ200 and Canon 500d close-up lens
1

I recently got a Canon 500d close-up lens to put on my FZ200. So, off to the butterfly house I went to try it out. I just screwed it on to the front of the camera, but I believe that using an extension tube may make it easier to use, as the tube doesn't move in or out like the lens does. Anyway, I found it a little tricky to use, as it changes focus with quite small movements, however it can give great results. Here are three shots that didn't come out too badly. Some were way out of focus and its obvious that a lot more practice is needed.

Very attractive composition, and perfect lighting.  Especially nice viewed in original.

Re: Chicago Botanic Garden

Terrific color, especially at the transitions.  The non-standard crop is fresh and invites the eye to explore.
