For new Magic Lantern users or interested - How to 'install', switch & delete ML.
Nov 29, 2013

** this is NOT my work, I just gathered, tested & cleaned up things, it was more complex & did not work, this is simpler and works for me & others, please comment/correct or release a better version, please! **

Files to Download: (DL= download, ML=Magic Lantern, TL=Tragic Lantern)

A. DL 'EOSCard.exe' utility using link from the installation section of the 5DMarkIII home page on ML site - or google it.

B. DL ML magiclantern-EOSM.106.Alpha1.zip (google it) OR latest TL tragiclantern-Tragic.2013Nov22.EOSM202.zip files (http://tl.bot-fly.com/) - via URLs shown - or use google.

** Use the TL file for now - the latest changes are there !! **

Steps to copy files to SD to 'install' TL/ML onto SD card:

1. First format your SD card on your computer (for safety).

2. Then format the card in your EOS M. This will create the 'DCIM' and 'MISC' folders on the SD card.

3. Unzip your chosen EOS M version TL or ML zip file and copy ALL files directly to your SD card 'root/top/main' folder/directory, (ML folder, autoexec.bin and EOSM_202.fir).

4. With the SD card still in the card reader, To make SD card bootable in camera, 'execute/run' the 'EOSCard utility' from downloaded Folder/directory on HardDrive, no need to copy it to SD card.

6. When EOSCard utility interface is open, check that correct SD Card is selected, then press the lower righthand 'ML' icon, and press 'save' icon on the top right of the EOSCard interface, now close this app.

7. Eject SD card, That is it!

8. Remove card and insert into Camera & proceed to below.

To Run Camera in ML mode - ie 'install':

1. Insert SD card with files from above steps, Turn camera on in Photo mode (middle button top dial), press menu, go 2nd from right (last wrench icon),
choose firmware version on bottom menu.
2. perform f/w update On Camera, not lens, press ok.
3. done, led should flash green lots, if no flashing red LED, good! Screen should flash a few, canon screens appear and then a full green ML text screen appears, SUCCESS! Read screen text, then Turn off camera.
4. Turn on the camera normally, it should look normal, to test if ML is there go to the ML menu, see below, then try some ML/TL functions.

NOTE: To select ML menu, place 2/TWO fingers/knuckles on touch screen, trashcan ONLY centers focus (unlike other cams), trashcan is NOT for getting ML menu.

See other websites for using ML & the various settings, ML defaults should give you a 'normal' camera !!

Steps to switch from ML mode to Canon mode:

To toggle ML from always booting do:

1. With Camera in ML mode & camera mode, do a re-load of firmware,
2. When green screen occurs, switch to A+ mode, top switch,
3. The camera will toggle the bootflag to false (not ML), read the screen!, that's it, turn off camera.
4. The camera will now boot up in canon mode - done!

** The screen says to clear out settings, this is likely not needed, but remember in case something is not as expected !!

STEPS TO REMOVE ML permanently FROM EOS-M and from SD card !!

1. Turn off camera, Remove SD card from camera
2. Insert SD in SD reader, Format card in computer.
3. Insert SD card in camera, Format card in camera.

!! EOS-M should now be same as from factory.

Known possible issues - not all:

-- hide signature --

-- Shutter-bug Issue.

Camera may stop working or taking photos, hangs.
There are two workarounds:
1.) Power up, rotate lens to break connection with camera and rotate back.
2.) Power on the camera then power it back off and then back on before the SD light flashes.
You get about a second, maybe two to do this.

*** Keep In Mind ***

-- When taking out the memory card, watch that your other hand, holding the camera, isn't hitting the power on/off switch. Possible corruption issues if you remove/insert card during power on/off cycle. Just like on a computer.

-- The camera in ML mode won't go into "Crop Mode" unless the top dial is in Movie mode via top switch!

I believe this is accurate to best of my ability at the moment.

Good Luck !

Note: I have only tested TL with a 22mm lens, seems stable, but some settings may cause hanging, just turn off &/or pull battery, then just power on normally, check that setting has been reset for safety/convenience.

My understanding is that the EOSCard utility may be needed only for high-capacity cards. It seems sufficient to copy the files to the SD card.

I had installed ML on my EOS M and used it for msome time. However, I have decided to un-install it ML software dries out the battery much faster. I was also concerned about the temperature gauge climbing up to 125 C (really scary...).

Did it seem any hotter with ML vs Canon ?  I suspect there might be problems with the temp gauge, others have questioned it, same for CHDK as well.

My EOS M seems to run pretty hot before ML, it it small and dense vs 650D, no real diff that I feel but have not done video for very long per shot w/ ML. Other cams I have, have gotten quite hot duing simple long exposures - 10/15 min, low ISO.

Did you by chance turn off everything ML and see if temp diff?

I enabled the cpu %, and if that is not near 100% w/ ML, suspect there is no diff to Canon, most I saw was almost 90% when focusing, will check more when videoing.

Sometimes being 'informed' is scarey, this could be one of those times !!

Just check cpu % in ML mode during video, fullHD @ 24, and was in low 50's%, so ML is very unlikely to increase temps! This is also with my speed setting at 1.7x, giving upwards of nearly 80mbps for my old SDHC class 10 card on some videos.

So I suspect there is NOTHING to fear from temps using ML, will watch more.

Subjectively, when the camera is in ML mode, the battery is depleted faster. I agree that the temperature gauge may be not correct. I had the same suspicion when I have noticed the temperature of 80 C almost immediately after switching the camera on. But it climbed to 125 C (so heated up by 45 C) in less than a minute, which seemed to me very fast anyway.

My EOS M seems to run pretty hot before ML, it it small and dense vs 650D, no real diff that I feel but have not done video for very long per shot w/ ML. Other cams I have, have gotten quite hot duing simple long exposures - 10/15 min, low ISO.

The temperature gauge is available only in ML layout. Temperature does show up with the original Canon firmware.

I enabled the cpu %, and if that is not near 100% w/ ML, suspect there is no diff to Canon, most I saw was almost 90% when focusing, will check more when videoing.

Sometimes being 'informed' is scarey, this could be one of those times !!

My other problem with ML was the famous "shutter bug" with the 18-55 STM lems. Some people do not experience it, but I am the unlucky one. It is still not clear what the cause of this issue is. Some say that it is the problem related to sertain SD cards. Maybe. But I tried a different card and still could not get rid of this bug.

In the meantime I have decided to wait for a stable version of ML. Probably, I will give ML another try later (when all works).

Just to note that on a mac you need MacBoot instead of EOSCard - http://www.zenoshrdlu.com/macboot/macboot.html

Update: For new Magic Lantern (ML) users or interested - How to 'install', switch & delete ML.
In reply to JJ Rodin, 10 months ago

** this is NOT my work, I just gathered, tested & cleaned up things, it was more complex & did not work, this is simpler and works for me & others, please comment/correct or release a better version, please! **

Files to Download: (DL= download, ML=Magic Lantern, TL=Tragic Lantern)

A. DL (Optional?) 'EOSCard.exe' utility, using link from the installation section of the 5DMarkIII home page on ML site - or google it. (For Macs, use 'MacBoot' - http://www.zenoshrdlu.com/macboot/macboot.html)

B. DL ML magiclantern-EOSM.106.Alpha1.zip (search it - obsolete) OR latest TL tragiclantern-Tragic.yyyymmdd.EOSM202.zip files (http://tl.bot-fly.com/) - AFAIK only at URL shown - or search it - likely to change.

** Use the TL file for now - the latest changes are usually there !! **

Steps to copy files to SD to 'install' TL/ML onto SD card:

1. Place Card In PC, Format (exFat or equiv) the card (for safety).

2. Remove & Format the card in your EOS M. Note that M sees card is the appropriate size (32gb or higher!), otherwise use a more appropriate format in PC, repeat step 2! This will create the 'DCIM' and 'MISC' folders on the SD card - keep them!

3. Place Card In PC, Unzip your chosen EOS M version TL or ML zip file and copy ALL files directly to your SD card 'root/top/main' folder/directory, (ML folder, autoexec.bin and EOSM_202.fir + the 2 Canon Folders - 'DCIM' and 'MISC').

4. (Optional? - needed only for new cards?) In PC, To make SD card bootable in camera, 'execute/run' the 'EOSCard/MacBoot utility' from downloaded Folder/directory on HardDrive, no need to copy it to SD card.

6. (Optional?) When EOSCard utility interface is open, check that correct SD Card is selected, then press the lower righthand 'ML' icon, and press 'save' icon on the top right of the EOSCard interface, now close this app. (MacBoot untested)

7. Done, Eject SD card, That is it!

8. Remove card and insert into Camera & proceed to below.

To Run Camera in ML mode - ie 'install' (Turns ON ML boot flag) do:

1. Insert SD card with files/folders from above steps, Turn camera on in Photo mode (middle button top dial), press menu, go 2nd from right (last wrench icon),
choose firmware version on bottom menu.
2. perform f/w update On Camera, not lens, press ok.
3. Done, wait, led should flash green lots, if no flashing red LED, good! Wait, Screen should flash a few times, Canon screens appear and then a full green ML text screen appears, SUCCESS! Read screen text, (it tells how to UNinstall) then Turn off camera.
4. Turn on the camera normally, it should look normal, to test if ML is there go to the ML menu, see below how, then try some ML/TL specific functions.

NOTE: To select ML menu, place 2/TWO 'fingers or knuckles' on touch screen, trashcan ONLY centers focus (unlike other cams), trashcan is NOT for getting ML menu.

See other websites for using ML & user guides, the various settings, ML defaults should give you a 'normal' camera !!

Steps to Switch from ML mode to Canon mode:

To toggle ML from always booting (turns OFF ML boot flag) do:

1. With Camera in ML mode & camera mode, do a re-load of firmware,
2. When green screen occurs, switch to A+ mode, top left switch,
3. The camera will toggle the bootflag to false (non ML), read the screen!, that's it, turn off camera.
4. The camera will now boot up in canon mode - done!

** The screen says to clear out settings, this is likely not needed, but remember in case something is not as expected, then reboot in ML mode, clear settings, then perform above again !!

STEPS to REMOVE ML permanently FROM EOS-M and from SD card !!

1. Perform 'Steps to switch from ML mode to Canon mode:' from above.

2. Turn off camera, Remove SD card from camera
3. Insert SD in SD reader, Format card in computer.
4. Insert SD card in camera, Format card in camera.

** EOS-M should now be same as before installing ML - no Canon settings should be altered.

Just like on any computer.

-- The camera in ML mode will not go into "Crop Mode" unless the top dial is in Movie mode via top switch! If it crashes, it MAY stay in crop mode - even when performing 'Canon' video recording!! Just reboot in ML mode and turn off the crop video feature.

-- It is generally wise to occasionally perform a low-level re-Format of your SD card in camera. Some users have noted that the highest bit rate writes are maintained by doing this - Important especially for high bit rate H.264 movies OR raw video.

Note: In the event of ANY crashing or hanging, simply turn off &/or pull battery, then just power on normally, check that settings, which MAY have caused the issue have been reset for safety/convenience.

REMEMBER! This is Experimental Enthusiast Firmware, striving to add or improve upon what Canon did NOT give you, No known cases of harm have occurred to cameras - Please do not Panic!

Please, Swear at your Politicians! NOT the developers of ML !

I believe this is accurate except in the cases of (optional?) as noted and MacBoot use - untested by me but used by others.

Please post any corrections in this forum!

Enjoy!

Hi, I am a recent new owner of the EOS M.  I got the camera body and outfitted this with a 50mm 1.4 manual prime lens.

I've gotten ML installed.  I've been trying our the magic zoom, but can't seem to get the focus to move.  It stays right center.  It will not move when I point to a different spot on the screen.  Is there some setting I need to turn on or off?

Thanks for the help.

When I had ML installed on the EOS M, Magic Zoom was not functioning right and kept flickering.

This was not the case with "Tragic Lantern", which is a variant of ML:

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/53011576

Magic Zoom with Tragic Lantern worked much better/without issue.

The TL interface menu text is larger/easier to work with while using the small touchscreen on the M.
