K3 Catch in Focus Surprise Today
Nov 23, 2013

So yesterday I discovered that indeed the K3 can do CIF.  Today I set the camera up expecting to capture blue jays and this is the visitor that I had; magpie.  Normally magpie's can't get at the peanut feeder as they are too big but this one was successful.  Taken in TaV mode with DA* 300 at ISO 640, f8 and 1/640 sec.

Catch in Focus where you set the camera in AFS mode, set the lens to MF, set a focus point and the shutter will fire when something is in focus.  This picture was taken while I was at work.

Beautiful shot, Dale! I didn't realize until I read this post that you actually got this shot while you at work (meaning you had the camera turned on (and left on) for quite a while in CIF mode). I'm curious if you got any more shots. I assume it will fire every time something comes into focus when you set that up, but since I haven't yet tried doing it, I don't know. I'm THIS CLOSE, however, to setting up a little blind on my back patio to shoot birds at my feeders and it would be nice to leave my cameras set to CIF for when I go inside for a break. (B&H FINALLY sent me a shipping notice on my K-3 Thursday!)

Yes Jeff I did get other shots but not that interesting.  It is a neat concept that I can come home and see what I have at the end of the day.  To avoid battery drain I use the Pentax DC cord.

Nice catch Dale.

If you have an IR remote, I would like to see if you can do CIF with that also. See link below.

Nice catch indeed!

Beautiful bird, we don't have those ones over here but saw some when we visited Banff National park in 2008.

Maybe this is a dumb question but, if you're using CIF, why doesn't the branch the bird's standing on trigger the shutter? I must be missing something, I'm sure.

Hi Fer:

The focus point for the camera was set just above the branch to where the bird is.
