200mm-400mm....400mm-600mm Is the difference equal?

I am looking seriously at the soon to be launched Tamron 150-600. I have a Canon 70-200 & the Sigma 120-400. Is the difference between 400 & 600, the same as that between 200 & 400?

No, you have to look at the percentage increase. 400 is 100% more than 200. 600 is only 50% more than 400.

I've just been looking at the MTF curves for this lens: http://www.tamron.eu/en/lenses/overview/single/product/sp-150-600mm-f5-63-vc-usd-5.html - click the MTF tab.

As always, data from different manufacturers may not be directly comparable, but even so this is quite impressive. It won't be as cheap as the Sigma 150-500 (it's a bigger lens) but it looks a *lot* better. Actually it's not a million miles away from the EF 300/2.8L II plus 2x Extender!

Sigma MTF here: http://www.sigma-imaging-uk.com/lens/telephoto-lens/apo-150-500mm-f5-6-3-dg-os-hsm - click the Data tab.

And the EF 300/2.8L II plus 2x MkIII: http://usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/ef_lens_lineup/ef_300mm_f_2_8l_is_ii_usm#Overview

Of course. Makes sense. Thanks Steve.

Nice little lens simulator on the Nikon website gives you quite a good idea of what you can expect http://www.europe-nikon.com/en_GB/product/nikkor-lenses/simulator

Yeah Tamron has stepped up their game a lot lately with the new 24-70 and 70-200 lenses.

However, I wonder if "600mm" will really be the full 600mm... on tamron's last 70-200 VC, it had very severe focus breathing, where at infinity it was almost 200mm, but at most other focus distances (where you would actually use it, it was more like 180mm).

Introducing focus breathing is supposedly a good way to increase sharpness (or so they say) and that's why a lot of the newer telephoto zooms have it (Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VRII for example, or the Sigma 120-300 f/2.8).

So I wonder if the "600mm" will really be closer to 500mm when focused at distances less than infinity.  It will be interesting to see what the reviews say.

And the 70-300L, which is only 200 mm at at its MFD of 1.5 m. But it's a trade-off I'd take every time.

Abit over my head, Motobloat, but it's something to think about. It makes me wonder whether my 120-400 is nearer 375mm then. It's an issue I will keep my eye on though, thanks.

Most zoom lenses are sharper when pulled back a bit from their maximum reach -

...so a  600 zoom is likely to be sharp at say 500 but a 400 zoom may well soften from 300 onwards - jus' a thought....

This is a great way to look at angle of view and magnification at different FL.

Enlightening.
