Nice photos, Kris. I am tempted by the new Tamron, having had a good experience with the 70-300VC.

Thanks Lee. I always thought the 200-500 was a very good lens and often ignored because no VC/OS/IS/VR... I think the new 150-600 will smoke all the Sigma in that range. It really comes down to price, but knowing Tamron I think it will be in the $1800 (US) range.

My last post was really to point out to Shood that making the general statement that a 2x on any zoom isn't a good idea isn't really true anymore. Perhaps a long time ago it was and with many lenses today it is.... But the Sigma 120-300 OS is a very unique beast and it pairs very well with the 2x TC. I don't think Shood has shot a SIgma 120-300 so he shouldn't be making claims when he is not familiar with the lens, especially when the 150-600 has not been released yet!

Tamron 150-600mm will release in Japan for the Canon mount first on Dec 19th. We should start seeing some reviews soon. And pricing in Japan has been set at 140,000 yen ($1350 US).

I cannot imagine this lens going for $1350 in the US.  I might break down crying right before I break out my Visa if that actually occurs.  I think Kris' guess at @$1800 is more likely but I know nothing about how prices change going from Japan to the US.

Hi

Do you know the prices of some other lenses, in particular Tamron lenses, so I can compare Japanese prices with my local prices?

Thanks

This is getting really cheap now.  I am a little concerned about the quality at this price but if the IQ is good it will kill the competition.

Yup if it's 1350, I'm going on a selling spree and this would be my "good light" lens and I would use my Sigma for low low light..

Same here.  My hopes dropped a little when I heard the price.  I'm not looking for a bargain; I'm looking for a sharp f/6.3 600mm lens with good IS that only weighs about 4 pounds; I'd pay US$2000 for an excellent one instead of $1069 for a "good-enough" one.

If you'd pay $2,000 for a lens like this, then you are not the market for a $1,070 lens. I would consider and probably buy a $1,070 long telephoto zoom that was good (though obviously not as good as the long primes, etc.) but wouldn't buy a $2,000 telephoto lens regardless of quality. There are things worth far more than $2,000 to me, but this isn't one of them. So a different market. BTW the lens you want might have to cost $2,000... or $4,000... or more than that, who knows.

I'm one of those people that's excited.  I have a Canon 100-400mm that's just not enough reach.  I can't pay $8000-12,000 and up for a better lens.  Would I pay $1070, I sure would.  Even if it's not good enough, it's a lot better than all the shots that I'm missed because I just didn't have the reach.  I'm sure it'll be a lot better than the cropping that I've been doing on my bird shots, lets hope anyway.  I'll have to read the reviews, but am really hoping they'll be good.

I'm in.

Just so happened I abused my Sigma 150-500 enough that it's no longer usable for me. Been watching this lens and as long as the quality is comparable to the Sigma with another 100mm I'll be happy.

I really hope they optimized this lens towards the longer end though. Usually by the time I pull off another lens to put a monster like this on it's because I need the long end of the focal range. Don't care if it looks like milky goggles at 150mm. For that matter I'd be happy with an affordable 600mm prime, as I'm sure I'd still be cropping my wildlife and many motorsports shots.

Either way at this price I'll pre order one. Short of longevity issues, I'll know within one weekend of shooting if it's a keeper or not. Just two weeks ago I got WAY closer to a bear than I felt comfortable with my 70-300. Wishing for a new lens quick!

Re: Prices not always indicate optical performance
In reply to Janoch, Dec 14, 2013

Pricing are usually more related to targeted market and competitions.  Many kit lenses (such as Canikon 18-55) are surprisingly good, though their prices are less than some filters.  This 150-600 are competing with C 100-400 L, N 80-400, and S 50-500, so it's priced to about half of CNs to be the category leader. It could sell a lot faster than their 24-70 and 70-200.  Good move, Tamron!  I am on it.
