D5300 vs. D7100 price with the 18-140 lens
10 months ago

Hi...

The Nikon D5300 bundle with the new Nikkor 18-140 zoom lens, still retails at around $1,400 (plus tax) in the US, which seems a bit high for the average user budget.

At the same time, Amazon sells the D7100 with the 18-140 for about $50 more only:

So, the body-only price difference at the same retailer is about $350:

In other words, apparently Nikon offers the 18-140 at practically $0 discount for bundling with the D5300 and at a $300 discount for bundling with the D7100.

Both cameras were released within 2013 and are not expected to be replaced within 2014.

So, if one wants to get the 18-140 with a new camera (not, for example, with the D5200, which Amazon sells at around $1,000 in the same bundle), sometime in the next 3 months, is there any point in waiting for the D5300 bundle to drop significantly in price?

Thanks.

Interestingly, the D5300 with the 18-140 sells for $1,200 at Henry's, so that may be a target price for the bundle, to be reached by the major retailers.

The D7100 came out months ago, while the D5300 just came out.  Prices will drop.

24 days till Black Friday. Nikon made similar error with D7100 introduction with 18-105 kit lens. Watch to see if Nikon offers an "extra $300 instant rebate" when you buy camera + lens.

Normal practice is to offer $100-$200 on kit lens price vs separate camera & lens deal. Nikon may also offer another lens or flash to go with 18-140.

I use the D5100 currently due to it's far lighter construction.  The d7100 has a list of features absent from the 5xxx series so if you need/want those features, don't mind the extra weight, go with the 7100.  There's more to camera selection than price, is what I'm saying!!

Silly me wasn't pay full attention.  I've only seen the jpg's from the Nikon site and they look a lot better than my d5100's raw images.  Whatever jpg quality difference there might turn out to be, between the 7100 and 5300 wouldn't factor into a decision I'd ever make with a DSLR, as I can't stomach the loss of control and other IQ issues that jpg causes.   A few times, I've shot a number of raw and jpgs of the same subject and for me it's a "no contest" situation with certain subject matter so I always keep my cameras set to RAW only
