Hmm.  600/6.3 ~= 95.24mm.  So if this thing really exists and has a 95mm filter ring, then Tamron is "hedging" either on the focal length or the maximum aperture.

Zooms always cheat a bit on the focal length and aperture.  The patent show 582mm f6.45.

That sounds almost too good to be true.  I owned a Minolta 400/4.5, which is similar to 600/6.3 with an imaginary 1.5X teleconverter on it.  It had a 95mm front filter (took drop ins).  It sold for $1900 years ago, but was built like 300/2.8 & 600/4 type lenses.  Screw drive AF (no built in motor), no IS.  Nowadays you can buy a used one for $2500 or so.

So a zoom with updated optics that goes out to 600/6.3 with a built in focus motor and VC for $1500 sounds like a tremendous bargain.  Presumably, the build is nothing like that old Minolta.  (I've seen the 180/3.5 and 70-200 and they're decent, but not like the more expensive OEM brands).  If it comes through at this price and is good at the tele end, I could be very interested in this lens.

I'm afraid at that price it will not be better than the Sigmas, which means rather mediocre optical quality at least at the long end. I wish I'm wrong, though

I think that's the big question...how well will it perform on the long end...Hopefully, since it's 600mm, it will edge out the Sigmas at 500mm

Anyone knows when this will be made available?

Hi

If you look at the number of glass (elements and groups) in the lens it is build like the 80-400/100-400/70-400 from Nikon/Canon/Sony, and it is a big increase from the 200-500, so I wouldnt rule out a good image quality from this monster lens

Take this with a grain of salt, but this is taken from a certain polish forum and is supposed to be a sample of the lens at 600mm.

It's a small size sample, has no exif to confirm, but if it's for real it looks very promising.

if that shot is from the new 150-600, that's very promising

And full size as well....excellent. Thank you for that link. At 100% you do see certain problems, but that is to be expected from such a lens, in fact I would say it fares better than I thought it would. Hopefully they went for a better longer than wider end.

it might be too early to tell, but are these images from the tammy better than the 120-400 or 150-500 sigmas?

I wish it had a short range limit of 2.7m-15m.  The long range limit is of no use to me.
