Pretty good for such extremes!  Like the goldfinch - cute little birds, and the juncos are one of those I don't get to see down here.

Migrators, kingfisher, osprey, heron, bug - and an iguana
In reply to steelhead3, Oct 27, 2013

This week, I've got more migrating birds passing through town, and some more hunterly action with the return of the kingfishers to my area, and some osprey fishing activity picking up.  All shots A580 & Minolta 300mm F4 APO + 1.4x TC:

Pine warbler on a grey afternoon high in the pines, where you'd expect him!

Another look at a pine warbler - there were dozens of them passing through

A blue grey gnatcatcher mixed in - these guys are seriously small

One of the local green iguanas hiding out in the long grasses - they're jurassic-looking and beautiful in all their details

An osprey landing in a tree with a fish

A great blue heron up close

Belted kingfisher hanging out on a snag

Another kingfisher followed behind when he saw the one get a fish - thinking about stealing it, surely!

Belted kingfisher flies off with a fresh fish catch

A shaft of light happened to be right on this butterfly and purple flower

Blue-winged teal hanging out

Nice selection Justin, everything seems to heading your way.  One of the refuges around here has close to 20,000 snow geese.  Thought about heading for some water fowl, but since is hunting season, it isn't as good an experience as the spring migration.  Like your Iguana; a friend of mine has had a pet one for a number of years, has the run of the house and only poops in the sink.  He is over 6' long.

Nice catch on the Kingfishers..They are like catching Lightning in a bottle.Too quick, seldom stop moving, are hard to find and quite leary, and you need a long lens to catch them..Other than that, are a piece of cake to photograph. Good job! Jimmymac

The heron vs snake photos are really great captures. Here are my contribution from underwater. The best I posted in a separate thread:

Re: **Weekly Wildlife Thread Oct 27** - A Fox Hunting Deer
In reply to steelhead3, Oct 27, 2013

Last night at 8:15 PM while having dinner, I turned on the back yard flood lights, and was stunned at what they revealed. A fox was circling a deer while it sized up the opportunity for a possible dinner of Bambi steak.

My A77 was close, but given the low lighting and lack of time to set up a tripod, I was forced to shoot handheld, at 1/4 second exposure and ISO 3200 to get the shot while they were still there. Given the slow shutter while being handheld, the picture is obviously fuzzy - but it did capture the encounter!

The fox finally decided that he was a bit too small to take on the doe, and wandered off.

Kitty from yesterday's hike.
In reply to steelhead3, Oct 28, 2013

More with the A77/70400G2. An old bobcat. It was spotted ahead of me on the trail and it started down the bank at the edge of an oak. It later climbed onto the side of a fallen tree and lay down. It's nice using a sharp 400mm lens to keep at a good enough distance for both of us.
