**** Weekly Wildlife Thread, Oct 26 to Oct 31 ****
6 months ago

It's Saturday in Tallinn, capital of Estonia, so we all can post. With it's forests, meadows, marshes, bogs, islands, and low human population, Estonia is a great place for wildlife. http://estonia.eu/about-estonia/country/estonian-nature-wildlife.html

To post your pics, please reply to THIS post and change the title. Otherwise, in threaded mode, your post will appear to be a comment to another's post. We don't want to overlook your pics! Threaded mode lists posts in a hierarchy which is ideal for viewing threads like this one.

Try to limit pics to three or so and identify subjects if possible. It would be nice if you would provide location and other info others might find interesting. And do comment on others' pics if so moved. Everyone is welcome to participate with any camera, any time. Lurkers and new members please join in.

When out viewing and photographing wildlife, I want all of you to be safe. I also want the wildlife to remain safe and minimally impacted by our presence.

White-crowned Sparrow
In reply to myssvictoria, 6 months ago

I made a visit to a new wastewater treatment facility located in our town. It was built to take care of the area's growth and it was heartily but futily opposed by nearby residents. But perhaps they had an effect as the county incorporated a very nice park in the design of the grounds. Met one of the opponents to the facility on the trails and she is now a convert. As far as birds, saw several species of waterfowl in the several ponds and various other birds on the trails. One bird seen was this nice White-crowned Sparrow. FZ200 + Nikon TC-E17ED, Lightroom4.

Osprey
In reply to myssvictoria, 6 months ago

An infrequent visitor to Semiahmoo finally showed itself several days ago. Osprey in tree shots taken with FZ70, and in flight shots taken with GX7+75-300.

Superb image Vickie. Lovely little bird. I have seen these birds before when I've been in the US.

Excellent series of shots Steve. The in-flight ones are really good, full of action. The FZ70 seems to be working well for you. I know the in-flight ones were taken using a different camera. Would you not have been able to get them with the FZ70? Just curious.

Black throated gray warbler
In reply to myssvictoria, 6 months ago

Another new one for me, it took me a while to ID this one.  The name is a mouthful!  I think this is a female.

A female lesser gold finch.

The FZ70 is much better than any other P&S I've tried for BIF. It can get sharp shots in good light (I haven't tried the FZ200). I usually keep it at 40X magnification or so. The biggest advantage of the GX7 kit is the much higher ISO - about 3 stops better.  600mm EFL is a little short for birds but going longer rapidly runs into problems of finding and tracking the subject.

Beautiful photo. Wickie!

Love the colors, the compo and the detailed little bird on the smooth bg.

Take care

Vitto

PS: Lol, a Nikon TC on your FZ200???

Looking at the result it seems a great "contamination"!

If you were shooting at the max FL (more than 1000mm equiv. on FF!!!) you have very steady hands, congrats!

you always have a nice variety, the first which I like for its drabness, not every bird is all showy! and shows how tough it can be to find, and last for its comp. and technique, take it for me.
