D610 to be announced within 48 hours (as of 10/5)

According to nikonrumors:

http://nikonrumors.com/

  • Slightly higher fps 6 vs. 5.5
  • D800-grade weather sealing

As far as NR knows

We can aways hope that Nikon has been tweaking some other functions.  All will be revealed

I don't know why they don't take the same sensor and shutter, put it in a D800 body and call it a D710.

Lol. Maybe just what they have done. With better shutter mechanism, better weather sealing, sounds like the budget D700 replacement (vs D800).

I doubt it...but if that's what they've done (i.e. create a D710...)...I'll be first in line.

Why would they want to do that. One of the ideas behind the D600/D610 is that it is smaller and lighter than a D800

Why Nikon don't put this D600 sensor in a D800 body? This would be the best camera.

If true, I'm really, really going to push for a refund for my D600 that I've had for 3 months, and see if I can side-grade to the D610 which hopefully doesn't have the oil/debris issue (which I have).

Nikon always claimed the weather sealing in the D600 was as good as that in the D800

So, apart from the fixed shutter, it seems you may only get a slightly better FPS.

Maybe by D640, I'll have my faith restored in Nikon?? Love my D700, works just as advertised, and no oil changes needed same weather sealing as D3, sorry I'll pass.

Now let the flames begin.

Ker-SLAP! That's the sound of Nikon slapping D600 owners with a new version of the camera WITHOUT the oil problems.

Some of us got slapped almost as hard with the release of the SB910 flash, which fixed SB900 issues and left those owners upset and selling on Craigslist. My buddy picked up a D600 on Friday for 800 bucks and someone has another one on craigs (in NY) for 700 dollars.

I don't want one for free. (Okay, MAYBE for free!

If these are the only improvement, I will consider this as an admittance from Nikon of correcting a well known issue...the oil issue related to the shutter system.

Well, since I just had my shutter replaced on my D600 under warranty, I guess I now basically have the D610! Lucky me.

Oh, your buddy did, huh?  Sorry, I don't believe it.  No offense.

Begging the question...

Another obvious clue is obsoleting a product after only one year of service barely pays for the engineering cost, leaving you with no profit.

The respin will cost less than the original engineering, but still adds to the total engineering cost of the product.

The bigger question now is what is to become of all the current owners of dusty/oily D600s?

A recall and replacement with a D610 will be horribly expensive to the companies bottom line, which is already experiencing a loss of sales in a slumping market (mainly China).

That would be awesome, but if a D610 shutter fit into a D600, why obsolete the D600 with a new model?

Maybe the model number change is purely for market perception to distance Nikon from the D600 issues.  Just throw in a few very minor improvements to give the new model number some credibility.

I really hope your repair works out for you and you get many years of enjoyment.
