Tamron 24-70 mm F/2.8 SP USD Di vs cz 24-70

After upgrade to a99 my finances are under a little pressure so I was considering the tamron 24-70 rather than the ziess.

Has anyone gone down this path and were they pleased with the lens..DXO mark suggests very little difference in IQ and one member on dyxum says the tamron has better low light af...

If you have this lens can you share a couple of sample shots....

You might want to also look at the Sigma 24-70 HSM. I use mine a lot and find it very close to the CZ except for the price.

I bought the lens for my A77, it's a Di lens so it is designed for Full frame and consequently there is a lot of glass. Holding it, the weight tends to cause the front of the camera to want to fall forward and because of the placement of the focus ring, the way you need to support it, it can sometimes cause you to bump it out of focus.

Other than that, image quality is just beautiful, I haven't had to use any internal focus correction and the focus is fast quiet and pin sharp. It's not ultra wide or long so think about what you want to use it for.

My motivation was to get more out of the video capability of the A77 since I was recording the noise of the focussing with my DT lens.

I posted some 100% crops recently

Hi Phil,

Zeiss lenses have their own look which I personally love, but others are as good or similar in most measurable ways.  If you want to save a few pounds the 28-75 f2.8 is a pretty good lens and the Sony retains use of AF-D too.

For what it's worth, I did a bit of unscientific testing with my KM 28-75/2.8D against the Zeiss 24-70/2.8. At roughly 8x the price, I wasn't able to notice any significant difference between them in IQ (the Zeiss was much quieter and much heavier).

(The KM, Tamron, and Sony versions of the 28-75/2.8 are all supposed to be optically identical.)

I agree, I used the Tamron 28-75 on the A77 and A99. My copy is just terrific, it's a little weaker than the 24-70 options at f/2.8 but from f/4 on you'd be hard-pressed to spot the difference. I very much prefer the lighter weight and smaller size of the 28-75 over the 24-70mm lenses.
