DMC-FZ70 Lens Hood - Semi Homemade
Sep 14, 2013

I recently got my paws on an FZ70 but it doesn't come with a lens hood.  It's not even offered as an accessory, probably because at 20 mm zoom almost any hood will vignette.  Being the stubborn cuss that I am I decided to see what I could do and this is what I came up with.

Parts:

1 Sunpak CF-7033-UV 55 mm UV filter

1 Bower HRW55 wide angle lens hood

Glue - I like Loctite Repair Extreme All Temprature

Steps: remove the rubber lens hood from the metal ring that threads onto the lend.  It's too deep and will cause vignetting (trust me, I tried it).  Carefully fit the rubber hood onto the Sunpak UV filter.  Be careful to position it so that it doesn't vignette.  Apply a thin bead of glue using a toothpick or end of a paper clip both inside and outside of where the hood meets the filter.  Position it on the camera and make sure it doesn't vignette.  Carefully remove it and let the glue set completely.  And you have this.  I also used a piece of EZPass Velcro to secure the lens cap when not in use.  Works great and doesn't wear out.

Ta-daaaaaaaa!

Where there's a way Jeff. It looks to me like you did a great job. I'm also amazed that the FZ70 didn't come with a lens hood, all the other FZ series cameras had one.

Did you keep UV glass?

Did you keep the UV glass inside the filter ring? Or did you remove it?

Thanks.  I took it for a test run yesterday in Norvin Green State Forest and it seemed to work pretty well.  I've included a sample below.

I kept it since I do a lot of hiking with my camera and I wanted a bit of protection for the lens.

I'm surprised the FZ70 comes with no hood. Apparently they have done all they can to keep the price point low, not a pleasing trend.

Try making comparison shots at full zoom on a pixel level. With and without the UV glass. At these magnifications ANY glass put in front of such lens could be causing troubles. I would definitely check this before having a UV filter constantly on. You could be losing resolution.

Nice workaround. Thanks for sharing the photo and instructions. Sounds like the lens hood was left off as another way to save a few cents, but to tell the truth, I've got them for all of my cameras and lenses and seldom use them anymore. They can serve a good purpose, though, and your idea is well thought out. I used the collapseable rubber hoods that screw on with my older film lenses, but also have collection of plastic ones with the newer lenses and they sit in the bag.

I got to thinking about your post some more and went to B&H's website. The FZ70 has a 55mm filter size and I'm wondering if this rubber hood wouldn't fit it:

This one above, however, is more for normal or short zoom lenses. This one says it's for wide angle:

Other choices in the 55mm range:

Maybe, but you will need something where the metal part isn't very deep or you'll get vignetting.

If anyone tries this hood , I wonder if they would be so kind as to let us know  how it works......or perhaps send me a message.......the Fz70 has my attention , but no hood is a problem.

Thanks.
